I'm just now realizing Pokemon is a really bad example of an RPG because in any game you can basically just steamroll everything. At least in other games this cost you something, like a few weeks for FF8 to grind cards and mats, but in Pokemon it's just auto-included that your team will be OP by Brock unless you deliberately handicapped yourself. If they actually cared about it they would have done significant stat changes back in the day, which they only really started doing in gen 7. IMO it peaked in gen 4, by gen 5 power creep started getting crazy and the growth of threats made it increasingly impossible to run a balanced team that had theoretical answers for every threat. So a lot of it came down to luck of the draw and just not running into the thing that your team has no answer for that absolutely destroys you.
