I have to wonder if this contributed to the decline of 4chan.

Unlike other sites, 4chins doesn't let you upload webp images. Obviously changing this would require developer time and effort, but I'm not going to get into that side of things.

Rather, I'm gonna talk about the user side. The lack of support causes problems for posters, because a lot of images on websites are webp nowadays. If you try pulling something from a news website, from random google results, from a fandom wikipage, from reddit, or some other place, there's a pretty big chance you are going to get a webp file.
And when a user tries to post it they'll be unable to do so. They're not going to go to the effort of converting the file, they're just not going to post instead.

A lot of big websites use webp now:

What is the advantage of this ?unless it's 10 times smaller in size and retains the same quality I don't think it justifies having these extensions here.

people who hate webp are just fucking retarded there is no other explanation, it's just another random image codec, firefox barely even now supports jpeg xl, it's in labs in version 152, I support jpeg xl usage as well as webp because they're both fine technologies

I actually do convert webp's in order to post them. Anyway, it's annoying but at least they let us post mp4's now. The thing that REALLY pisses me of is the 4mb file size limit. It would be so much easier if file limit was 10mb instead. There's so many videos that I want to post to /gif/ that I can manage to compress to under 10mb but just can't get under 4mb without reducing the quality to the point that it's borderline unwatchable.

And might I ask what exactly you were doing on /gif/?

great job breaking the basic functionality of web browsing there, Google! what's next, YouTube videos we can't simply right-click and save?

yeah thats a pretty annoying example of how the lack of support for webp makes posting images on this site much harder.
Most posters aren't going to be able to figure out that the jpg is secretly a webp (which 4chinz doesnt support), so they'll prolly just give up.

many will bother converting
i would say it's a good barrier to entry for posting, probably fewer dogshit retard posts because of it

if 4chan were a newer site maybe you'd have a point but no, i don't think a lack of webp support affected the users in either direction much
