So, lets say you fund the 457b and make big gains on investments in the 457b, and the gains are tax free, you can retire at 50-58 years old and begin taking money out with out penalty. The 401k requires you be 59-1/2 years old before taking money out without penalty. You could get fired, laid off and be unemployed and with the 457b you can start withdrawing penalty free to support yourself if you needed (withdraw mean interest and dividends being earned and may not reduce your overall balance) until you get another job, if you need another job. Also note the benefits of creditor protection - 401ks and 457s are protected from creditors, some states do not protect the Roth from creditors, so check your state. 401k/457s contributions are pre employment tax, if you contribute to Roth that money is what is left over after employment tax is taken out, there are limits to what you can with draw from your Roth before 59-1/2 without penalty, I believe its its only what you contributed, not the tax free gains. Seriously consider maxing out the 457, and depending on the amount left over in your paycheck you may also be able to contribute to the Roth, but there are contribution limits for each seperately and both together. See someone who can explain all this to you.
