A $100 bond (face value) that sells for $98 is 2% interest rate. No one wants your bond at $98 so you have to lower the price to say $96 which is a 4% interest rate. The government needs the money, so they need to sell bonds to borrow the money. If the interest rate is getting too high then the big banks are instructed to buy the bonds to keep the price from going to low. They then sell the bonds to the fed which cant print infinite money, so it cost the banks nothing, and in reality they sell the bonds to the fed at higher rates to make a profit. It is just a big game maed to look complex/official to keep the game going.

You can play it safe by buying ETFs until you want to buy a single stock to also invest in, but single stocks can tank for no reason and stay down for long periods before returning to normal.
