I have a pretty comfy low stress life, but sometimes I wish I were a Japanese salaryman in the 80s. Something about working long hours, going out to bars with coworkers afterwards, maybe having an affair on the side, and catching the train home at midnight actually sounds amazing.

yeah, having an actual society and nation to be a part of would be nice

It is a full life, agreed.

Pretty much life was like before 2000.
Now there is no upward mobility

This is just big city life, same thing in New York or London.

Of course now they're crime filled shitholes.

maybe for a week or two, but living 80 years like that is crazy

Working long hours feels rewarding when your job has actual upward mobility.
I feel like every "good" job I've had I get a year of happily busting my ass before it becomes clear it's actually a dead end job situation.

I’m a doctor but that’s pretty much my life currently. I work hard, get good pay, then i might do some other shit like going to bar with my doctor mates or go to the gym. It is very stimulating and fun in that sense but also time goes by so fast. It’s kinda comparable to partying where activity is very fast paced but time goes by fast too.

The only difference is that i know i could just drop out and take a long unpaid vacation if i wanted to and find work immediately afterwards. If i knew i can’t just take vacations or find other work easily, i would probably be even more immersed into it.

I’ve been dating a woman for a little over a year. I’m afraid of choosing to settle with her because due to a big city there is endless amount of pussy around.

Can we get back to being a salaryman in japan in the late 20th century?
Your situations are in no way comparable to that cultural peak
Do you get to feel up girls in sailor uniforms on trains?
Do you drink sake and sing karaoke?
Do you get to come home late at night to a Japanese wife who tells you that the kids got another perfect score on their latest test?

If you weren’t rich by 2020, you never will be.

A Japanese salaryman made a decent income, but more importantly, had a job for life, no matter what
