Services are much better, faster, cheaper, because of economies of scale. I can order whatever I want (fresh food, electronics, whatever), and it's on my doorstep in less than an hour. I can step out my door, walk 2 minutes and get some groceries. If I want, I can get fresh food at 4am even. I get 3gbps symmetric broadband for pretty cheap.
And of course the salary, I make a little over 200k just a year out of college, which is probably more than double what I would make in a rural area.

I've done rural living, city living, and suburbs, and city living isn't all its cracked up to be.
Want to invite friends over? Oh shit there's nowhere to park, guess they can either risk getting a ticket or walking 2 miles from the nearest parking lot that will only let them stay 3 hours. Guess it's fine if all your friends live in the city and can take public transit over, but everyone outside the city will have trouble.
Can't be too loud or run the party too late because you share walls and you'll get noise complaints.
Want to move in/out? Well shit you have to book out the elevator and move shit up and down all day and hope you can get a parking spot near the front for your moving truck.
Not to mention sirens and road traffic noise at all hours of the day/night, and the crime and immigrants are everywhere, it's inescapable.

And yeah rural areas, everyone knows you and each other, and you'll always be an outsider unless you've lived there for 3 generations, which point you become the "new" family. There's still crime, people had stolen gas from our cars some nights, meth users were still around and stole from people, but they were less of a problem. We had a massive driveway which was annoying to maintain but fun, it was easy to host parties of dozens of people, have a massive bonfire, and just do what you want. Sucked going on a 45 minute drive to see a movie, or pickup a package, or 15 minutes to the post office. Seemed like any errand becomes a whole day event.

Suburbs felt like the best of both worlds. Could still have a dozen people over for a party, fit half their cars in your driveway and there would be plenty of parking on the street. No noise complaints since there were no shared walls. You could go see a movie or run errands in 10-15 minutes. Besides a lawnmower in the morning the neighborhood is quiet all day and night. No crime at all. A garage to protect your vehicle from the elements or hook up to a charger.

Maybe in your area. For me, it's at most a 15 minute drive.
2-5 minutes of driving before you get to a main city artery, and that's nice driving, wide open roads, green grass everywhere, nice houses, trees, and sidewalks. Maybe 1-2 stop signs but there's barely any traffic. The main city driving sucks and that's where you'll hit the stroads and all the intersections but at that point you're right in the city, you can go pretty much anywhere else pretty easily, or maybe the destination is a strip mall in which case it's convenient to have right there.

I don't condone McMansions but yes at that point you can start building out new commercial space on the outskirts for cheap, and you'll have a sizable workforce to build off of that can afford to live near their workplace, rather than trying to increasingly cram millions of people into more dense space. This densification trend is just reducing everyone's quality of life, pushing up prices near the city core even more as more people must live near it for work, and continuing the trend of everyone having fewer kids since there's nowhere to raise them.
Ending immigration would also solve this, one way or another, so I'd be happy with that too.

I found privacy in rural areas to be non-existent. All my neighbors (white) wanted to get to know me, and in my attempt to remain on friendly/neighborly terms, ended up going over to their place occasionally and sometimes having them over at mine. Every time I went into the nearest town (population 7k) I always saw the same people, the shopkeepers/cashiers were almost always the same people, and they also knew all my neighbors, literally couldn't go anywhere without someone knowing of you, and exactly where you live. The word spreads quick in these small towns. After a few years it got to the point where the grocery store cashier knew exactly what food I ate. This level of familiarity might sound nice but it sucks how prevalent it is. Literally everywhere I was running into people and having to say hi and a quick catchup conversation. I just want to be just another face in a crowd, get shit done, and leave.
As you said, living in the city nobody even bothers to notice you and it is nice.
I don't even know how you would avoid that unless you only went to large cities to restock. Maybe remote is better in that regard, but I'd still be concerned about random people trespassing and going around your home/property if you're not around.

I got my driver's license pretty late in my early 20s, and it feels like such a waste to not get it once you have a decent paying job, just stunting yourselves and what you can do for no reason, limiting yourself to one geographic location. Like what if you wanted to do something outside the city? You can't even rent a car to drive somewhere, can't easily travel around other cities without learning their public transit system (if they even have one), can't go skiing or drive down to a lake or hiking trail without paying a fortune in fees to take a taxi everywhere. Always at the mercy of the public transit and having to share space with the public. I can't imagine how limiting it would be for employment opportunities as well. With a car you can go anywhere.
Maybe it'll be fine and we'll have unsupervised self-driving cars across the country in a few years, but who knows, I thought we'd have them 5 years ago, maybe they'll never come.

I used to be a mailman for a gated community where rich people larped as rural folk 2 minutes from a mid-sized city. My parents themselves aren't super rich, just ended up getting lucky with their farm going up in value a shit ton and the previous owners were getting a divorce and needed a quick sale. They'd typically be priced out but everything all came together for them. It's wild meeting their neighbors and seeing what it's like though, big ass boats every few driveways, 2-3 car garages, every house has enough driveway for a dozen cars, roads wide enough for street parking on both sides, pools, fancy cars, and half of the people there aren't even living there most of the year. Most of them have businesses and houses in other states that they fly to and live in, while their 6-8 bedroom 4 bathroom mansions and 2+ acre backyards just sits empty the rest of the time.
I don't think I could do the bfe thing, being too remote isn't for me, but I often daydream about quitting my job and going out inna woods and just living my life out there. It can be a hard life unless you have enough money to make it comfy.
Sometimes I think about getting an RV once we get unsupervised self-driving, I feel like it could be fun to travel around the country and live cheap out of it without having the mental stress of driving all the time. But the cost is probably worse than living out of my apartment when I think about the cost of lot fees and maintenance and gas, and I don't really want to live my whole life like that.
