Bought my car for $9k and expect it to last 7 years. Spend $70 a month on insurance, $80-100 on gas, and get a $70 oil change every 3 months. Including registration I would say it’s closer to about $250-300 a month all in. Rent living somewhere without local transportation is about $500-600 cheaper a month, so I’m actually net positive choosing to live farther away and commute.

Not everything should be dollars and cents. You’re better off owning a car and experiencing life. I’m so jealous of drivers. I got my license at 18 and was so terrified of driving that I only drove two or three times after. I haven’t driven since 2015 and I’m 31 now. I’ve given up on ever being able to drive because I can’t go through the embarrassment of driver’s ed again at 30+. I’d give up my whole net worth to be able to drive.

You’re right I forgot tires and breaks, tires are about $600 every 2 years, and breaks about $300. That’s only about an extra $35 a month. So $335 all together, that is still way cheaper than rent in America somewhere with sufficient public transportation
