Everything else is literally fake and gay (you do not check for sure how many funds you actually have, are they real, and also you lose privacy).

that's right, the only way to know *for sure* how many Bitcoin you have (e.g. did someone paid you Btc just now or not) is to run Bitcoin Core and let it fully synchronise - which can take hours or days the first time.

If you have 1 TB free space then keep entire blockchain on disk, if not then set that option prune to limit used disk space (to for example 5 GB)
