My 13-month CD just matured. I put in $45k and got $47k back. Is a free $2k for doing absolutely nothing a good deal? I think it is. Not as lucrative as some other riskier investments, but it's a solid thing, and I didn't need the 45k anyway. Better to earn interest than lose wealth to inflation.

No, it's not a good deal. The banking sector is under immense margin debt load and 4.5% return barely keeps up with inflation. Margin debt is back to 2008 crash levels. I wouldn't trust banks right now. 3 large lenders just went under in the last month, and we're going to see more. CDs are not covered by FDIC the same way regular deposits are.
