You can buy 100 shares of something you believe in and then sell calls to make some extra money.The problem is you will eventually get assigned which will result in you paying short term capital gains. So it depends on your tax bracket and how much you are beating buy and hold by.I have been selling SPY covered calls the past few months and have only made 5% over buy and hold which isn't that great.But it has been a bull market. If the market was sideways I would over perform.
