What kinda question is this? Finance is mostly sales. You sell financial products and services and instruments.

There’s nothing special or opaque going on in wallsreet

I did an investment banking summer internship in NYC after my junior year of college and then got a return offer for after graduation at one of the firms in OPs pic rel. Did my analyst stint there before moving to private equity. Not flame. I eventually moved back into investment banking where I've been for many years now. I won't say which firm, but I will answer reasonable questions as time allows tonight.

Have family who works there, Im at a private utilities company. Director level Finance and Risk.

They burned their asses for forever and a day to make it to PM so they could rock 500k base with 1mil+ options or RSU. I took a slower route and make 250k base plus 30% Bonus. I work 8-5 M-F with an hour lunch that I never take and rarely work weekends. From my POV, the juice isnt worth the squeeze. I have two kids, a large house in a vreat neighborhood and My two under 5 kids already have enough for private school and an Ivy+ in their 529 plan provided the market doesnt go tits up . Gonna have a third kid probably soon.

My advice is to maybe work on wall street for the pedigree for a few years, but drop down to a comfy 9-5 as soon as possible. burning yourself out for style points and ruining your body isnt worth it.

I had the opportunity but turned it down. Was in mid to high tech position at one of those places and was given the chance to move to NY and directly work in supporting the tech and then would transition into a team and start learning all that stuff. If you are young and have money to afford like 5-10 years of living expenses in NY and straight hustle and grind then yes. Cause it's stupid to stay once you learn everything and the turnover is ridiculous. Other option is basically live poor until you get good cause salary was around 35k-40k, commision heavy of course, no joke (mid 2000s), and you could get cut/severed within 30 days of the start date (there was a small training/grace period). The 30 day thing was wild to me cause I never seen it in a position before, alongside low ass salary (literal paycut at the time), and in NY, fuck that, but i often wonder

Do you enjoy it? or are you more in agreement with >>61331179

"Enjoy" isn't the first word I would use to describe my relationship to the job, but it's done pretty well for me. Making six figures straight out of undergrad was nice and I've spent my career around very intelligent people.

The 8-5 M-F $250k + bonus guy sounds based and I totally agree with his take, actually. That path is just as good. Take that in a heartbeat if you have the opportunity.

I make more than him but I also work with sociopaths and have weird health problems and have seen a lot of fucked of social stuff money can do to people. Like he says the juice may not be worth the squeeze. But Wall Street has made me a multimillionaire, which means less than it used to, but gives me options. It's a good career path for those who can get it and it's been a fun ride. Wild shit has happened over the last 10-15 years I've been here.

For how long are they going on vacation for?

Would you say that it is intellectually stimulating? Or if not, do you enjoy having to sell yourself/products to others?

You know, there was a strange picture of Trump sitting at a desk with a fairly sinister looking meme of himself with a diamond grill on his phone. His phone has the time shown as 11/17. Monday is 11/17

Would say as a soft perk that the quality of your day to day conversations being around people who arent brainlets is probably huge. Aside from like one or two people, the vast majority of my coworkers possess a standard deviation above room temperature IQ. Coupled with low quality office drama its sometimes soul crushing. And they just move at a snails pace when it comes to doing anything.
