Should I sell my car and get a cheaper one?
>>
No, lol.
Driving a BMW compared to Toyota is like getting your ass licked by Olivia Rodrigo while Sydney Sweeney is giving you a blowjob to getting a handjob by a 80 yo granny.

Enjoy your life
>>
is only a problem if the parts are hard to find.
>>
>>61375723
If its still worth money, maybe.

Lets say the car has lost 30-80% of the value you paid for it. Keep it and drive it until something expensive breaks.
>It's a lesson everyone has to learn once
>There is nothing that looks worse than a poor person driving a half broken used "luxury" car
>>
>>61375738
I bought it at a time I had a lot of crypto. I bought it on finance even though I could have bought the car outright for cash.

Fast forward a year later and I got absolutely destroyed by crypto and now I'm just paying for the car with my wages. It's been an absolute black hole, it takes like a third of my wages. I am pretty close to fully liquidated in crypto now and desu owning this car means I'm living pay check to pay check now. I don't save any money.
>>
>>61375723

Congrats you played yourself. What bmw are we talking about(model and chassis code)? Most likley the answer is sell it and buy something older and cheaper in good nick if you don't want a jap shitbox. If you want german 90s to early 00s mercs offer fantastic value and are very nice to drive, some of them are not that pretty, but are dirt cheap, reliable(if not trashed to death) and material quality in interiour beats 80% of shit that you can buy
>>
I like my bmw it's smooth, controlled and powerful™
>>
>>61375945
It's an f40 m135i. I know it's not the most expensive car, but when I first went to the dealership, I had £150k+ in crypto and could have walked out with the most expensive car on the lot, cash. But when I took it out, things quickly crashed on me. A lot of bad choices and now I have close to nothing left in crypto. My salary is about £30k and the car about 30k when I bought it.

Its not even that expensive like I said, but I'm just getting ass raped by it. You take the monthly payment, then add £100 monthly for insurance, £200 fuel, maybe another £100 in maintenance a month and the shit all starts to add up.

I just bought it at the wrong time. If I bought it cash when I had the crypto, I wouldn't have this issue. But I've still got so much of this piece of shit to pay off

What's the milage and how many miles you do per year? Generally there comes a time in bmw's ownership where you get assraped by the servicing it has to get done, especially since it's m. If you are close to 120-150k miles on odometer, then get rid of it ASAP before you get financially gaped, since you can can rack up 1-2k repair bills easily.
>>

owned a bmw for almost 9 years and getting rid of it was unironically one of the best financial decisions I have made. I saved so much money per month (depreciation, service, random repairs, gas, maintenance, new tires/breaks/random shit, insurance, headache...) that I could work one day less per week. It was pretty much 2 options. Either wageslave 5days a week (40hours) and drive one or waveslave 4days a week(32hours) and take the bus. The bus option won and I refuse to ever go back, fuck cars.
>>
no car = no gf

simple
>>
has it already taken the massive depreciation hit? No more than 20% of your yearly income or 2% of your networth whatever's higher is good general guidance. No payments ever if you can't pay cash you can't afford it.

when you're broke AF you need to be fixing that not driving a nice car.

protip: no one important gives a shit about your car. no one, not even women

>>61375732
lmao muh luxury

meanwhile in reality the guy driving a toyota is fucking 8s and 9s at the bar and the europoor is sitting at home jerking off to car magazines.

I have owned BWMs (2), Audi, Mercedes (2), Jag, Toyota, Honda, Infinity's btw. if you can afford it comfortably drive whatever you want. Afford it means paid in cash and less than 2% NW. Worth a million, you can have a 20k car. I always forget biz is the poors trying to flash luxury with payments with no real net worth.
>>
>>61381564
Sounds like a win-win deal
>>
>>61375994
You're most likely underwater on that car after taxes, if the car was $30k+tax and you financed the whole amount then the stealership will probably offer you like $20k for it meaning you'd have to pay the difference of $30k+20% tax - $20000 = $16,000. I somehow doubt you've made $16,000 in payments over the past year so it will actually cost you money to get rid of the car and you'll be left with nothing afterwards.

Holy shit the UK has high taxes, how have you not killed your politicians yet?

Go talk to a bunch of dealerships/ car selling websites and see what they offer you for it, asking here isn't going to solve your problems.
>>
>>61375732
BMWs are for blacks. lexus is more classy and reliable (low time preference choice = white)
>>
>>61375723
There's zero reason to buy a car above 35k today, and even that is pushing it a bit. You could buy something like a brand new Mazda 3 (non turbo, non cvt) for 25k or whatever, drive it for 10 years with no issues, and sell it for a good percentage of what you paid. Your annual vehicle cost, including original purchase price, insurance, maintenance, fuel, etc. might be 4-5k for those 10 years. Compare this to a car that's 2-3x the price, with much higher insurance, maintenance, and fuel (for trucktards). I have a young coworker who spends $850/month on his truck, 200 on fuel, 600 on insurance, and that's before any maintenance, so literally over 20k a year on a stupid truck, which takes close to 30k of pretax income. I tell him the truck is ruining his financial future, but he says he always dreamed about having a truck.
>>
>>61381776
this. I did a lil bit of napkin math a few years back when I was thinking about getting the new gr86. putting 30k into a car + another 20-30k in gas/maintenance/insurance/etc. over the next 10 years would probably leave me with a car worth 10-15k car. 45-50k loss. me putting that shit into an index fund would realisticaly end up with over 100k. 100k sounds better than 10k if you ask me.

Yeah but then why bother living? I mean living costs money and if you kill yourself then you can save all of that money.

At the end of the day money is a means to living your life the way you want to and for some people that means driving a car that makes them smile. It probably makes no sense to people like you.
>>
>>61381876
you have a weird definition of living if driving around in your car is such an important part of your life. most people use a car just as a tool to go to work and maybe grocery shopping. they spend only a very small fraction of their time in their car but yet people like you advice them to spend most of their money on it. it doesnt make any sense.
>>
>>61375723
A goal of mine when I was young was to finish college and buy a BMW 5 or 7-series (niggermobile, I know). Now that I'm established and have big money, BMW doesn't impress me anymore. When I was in the market for an upgrade in 2021, I considered getting a BMW, Mercedes, or budget-friendly compact SUV. I ultimately got a new Tesla Model 3 which I still love driving. My mother got a 2 or 3 year old used Mercedes SUV but it crapped out on her within 5 years.

you cant have "fun" on the regular street. you can always rent a car out for a day if you have the itch, no point in owning one. you would need an actual race track to have actual fun.

The cheapest way to have a car is unironically driving a high end brand - BMW, Mercedes.
There is very little depreciation between 4 and 10 years, You could buy a model that is 4 years old, have it for 4-5 years then sell it again - at around what you gave for it. Your car is free, you just have to put up a "deposit".

I bought a Kia Forte new during COVID for $20k. It depreciated to $16k the moment I drove it off the lot, and it is still worth $16k blue book today. I financed it for 3 years and paid it off in 2.5. It's mine now, it does everything I need, and I never have to worry about it breaking down. (I would have bought a good used car but COVID fucked the used market, it would've cost $15k to get a used car worth a damn but new car prices were tanking and I absolutely had to have reliable transportation so it actually made sense to buy new at that time.)

I'd love to buy something new like a high end corvette, but there's absolutely no reason to even consider it unless I make it and can afford a fancy toy like that. Pic related is $250k (it's the top end trim with 1250 HP -- almost a hypercar). I wouldn't be comfortable buying something like that until I had $25M in the bank. There's just no point. Financial freedom is more important. It is always more important. Only once you have financial freedom can things like fun sports cars enter the picture.

It absolutely does not, those people are just afraid to use their engines or don't see a need to. I used to think the same thing when I had a shitbox corolla and would rev the piss out of it to overtake people in their fancy luxury cars. Only when I got a slightly nice car with a little bit of real power did I understand that most of those cars are hiding a lot of chained horses. Going from a 130hp shitbox to 225 which is like the entry level for performance was an eye opening experience.

>>61375723
My mantra will be to always buy at least a 5 years old top of the line shitbox, preferably a large station wagon.
At that point depreciation will have reduced the price significantly, parts will be everywhere and cheap, and I can fix it myself if it breaks thanks to extensive documentation made since release.
Buying new cars is for shmucks.

If you want a real luxury car that doesn't break all the time - Lexus or Acura.
>>
>>61375723
I've driven BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and a few others. German cars are noticeably more comfortable, but the premium isn’t worth it unless you have money to spare. If budget matters, just pick something else.
>>
I've saved a lot of money driving a shitbox around. A lot of money. Still I regret wasting my younger years driving a shitty car. Driving a shitty car is like wearing ill fitting clothes. You feel bad even if nobody cares or even notices. Likewise, driving a good car is like putting on a nice suit. It just makes you feel good, and it makes you behave like you're worth a shit. That's attractive.
>>

Toys like that suck anyway. You have to go to trackdays and get a lot of training to be able to use it even at 50% of its potential on the track. Forget about even going past 2/10ths on the street. I used to ride the bus to work, but even then I had to drive my car 20 minutes to a central bus station since the bus connection from my town never synced with the line that goes to my workplace kek. It used to be 20 minutes by car + 10 minute safety gap + 2 hour bus ride in the morning, and 1.5 hour bus ride + 20 minutes car drive in the evening. Now I only use a car and it takes me 1.4 hours each way on average. Sucks that I can't watch videos any longer but at least now I am forced to read audiobooks.

>If you aren't a retard and understand how shit works
And you have a personal garage with professional equipment and like to waste weekends wrenching covered in oil and don't mind the occasional break in the middle of the highway and you are also OK with parts becoming scracer and more expensive year by year then by all means enjoy maining a hobby car like a 2001 bimmer. My Suzuki's two visits a year to a professional for checks and maintenance costs less than whatever you spend a year on extra fuel and parts, and that's without including all the time you spend crouching into the engine or laying under your car. I gladly pay other people to ruin their bodies in my place.
