Look up a hallmark guide, it’s pretty easy to figure out what’s what. The main thing you are looking for is EPNS on the back which is electro plated nickel steel, if you see that just forget about it. You can also generally see what’s plated trash straight away because the plating is coming off and it looks fucked. You can test with magnets, magnet will stick to plated but not sterling. If you find something you are pretty certain on pull up the hallmark guide on your phone and identify it. If you can’t identify the hallmarks but are pretty sure it’s sterling just buy it anyway who gives a shit about five or ten bucks.In the last six months I have stopped at every second hand and antique shop that I went past and found a grand total of one (1) sterling soup spoon so don’t get too excited.
