Paul went into it with the goal not of winning but getting to 8 and doing decently. This would have been almost as good as winning as far as his legitimacy and prestige/humiliating Joshua. But with this loss he fell a little short

So in that sense, he's doing very well and making loads of money. Losing to AJ doesn't hurt his marketability either because he can just hand wave it as Jake fighting outside his division and fighting a massive heavyweight.In this case he was also a little desperate. He owns a promotional stable which has been signing up female boxers nonstop, he's probably got the biggest stable of female boxers. Now he needs to get them fights and he features them on his undercard and it's a win-win, they get fight dates and he as their promoter gets paid. When Netflix pulled out because Tank Davis hit his woman, now all the sudden Paul is looking at not getting paid as a fighter or promoter, and all the sudden his stable of fighters don't have fights. Since Paul likes big events he needs a big marketable name so Netflix will pick him up again and right now there is precious few available. Paul's hands were sort of tied into taking this AJ fight.
