The government now gives me $2000 tax free for the rest of my life(scaling with the military pay scale). What's should I do next? Financially speaking. What would you do?

What is your disability? 80% sounds like you can't do much.

This is VA disability. You can get 100% and still be completely fine and able to work full time. I got
>70% for PTSD
>20% for scars
>10% for a sinus condition they had me on medicine for while I'm
The math they do is funky so it comes out to 80%

I'm not a burger but how does that not constitute fraud in the eyes of the law? lmao

I have a minor hernia from when I was in the Navy. Can I get something for that?
>>
>>61522150
The government is the law and they're the ones who made the rules that way. They are the law
>>
>>61522150
No. Wouldn't be surprised if it gets changed later though.

>>61522151
Minor hernia repair isn't a winner by any means. Even if you get a percentage I would expect an audit which actually happens from time to time.

Do you have records showing it happened in the military? Maybe

>VA Hernia Rating Percentages
Inguinal Hernia (most common)
0% – Small, reducible, or healed with no symptoms
10% – Post-surgery, recurrent, readily reducible, well supported by truss or belt
30% – Small, post-op recurrent or unoperated irremediable, not well supported
60% – Large, post-op recurrent, not well supported, severe, inoperable
Bilateral hernias can receive an extra 10% added if both sides are service-connected.

Hiatal Hernia (GERD-type symptoms)
Rated based on symptoms rather than size:
10% – Two or more mild symptoms (heartburn, regurgitation, etc.)
30% – Persistent symptoms causing significant impairment
60% – Severe symptoms like pain, vomiting, weight loss, anemia

Umbilical / Ventral Hernia
0% – Healed or no disability
20% – Small, not well supported by belt
40% – Large, not well supported
100% – Massive, severe, inoperable (rare)
What This Means in Monthly Pay (2025 est., single veteran)
10% ~$171/month
30% ~$524/month
60% ~$1,361/month
(Dependents increase pay.)
Important VA Rules to Know
Surgery alone does NOT guarantee a rating
If it’s fully repaired and symptom-free, the VA often assigns 0%
You can still get service connection at 0%, which allows:
Free VA care for the condition
Future increases if it worsens
Scars from hernia surgery may qualify for a separate rating

>Wouldn't be surprised if it gets changed later though
Maybe, people have been saying that for decades though. Military rule changes normally grandfather people in though. Maybe the military downsizing will help with things
>>
>>61522169
I don't have the documents myself, but the military's records will show no hernia on the entrance physical and hernia on the exit physical. It looks like it would be 20% for umbilical hernia. Is this worth the effort?
>>
>>61522080
In 5 years, that $2000 will be the equivalent of $200 today in purchasing power. You're fucked.

I'd say so. I'd reach out to a VSO and they'll give you the documents. Then just use chatgpt for what to do next and how to do it. Do you have a spouse or kids? Can't hurt
>>61522190
It scales with whatever the military makes, so if they're not getting paid anything we'll have a lot to worry about

No one every thought the blended retirement system would ever happen now look. The benefits are slowly dwindling in the military and has been since 2004. It wont go back to what it was until after the next big one.

>No one every thought the blended retirement system would ever happen now look
That's a good example of something that changed but everyone was grandfathered in and the people currently in had the option between the two before a certain date

I’d pay off my student loans, but maybe that’s just my crazy idea.

Not yet because I have a travel job. Will probably do this for another year
