It basically boils down to defationary vs inflationary monetary policy. the way they talk about silver coinage as being this inflationary mechanism that the gold standard defenders were against is hilarious from a modern lens where we have instead meaningless paper and code as infinitely inflationary currency.from what i read there were real problems with regular people not being able to do business due to lack of currency. farmers not selling their surplus to cities etc. just not enough gold to go around for regular peoples day to day affairs. which is why the free silver movement was a populist movement against the elites gold standard only demands.The elites apparently were afraid the influx of silver would drain away the gold and it did at one point happen but surely the silver supply had limits to how much it could grow? could no one see that back then?
