The thing that shocked me about my time in Germany was the contrast between peoples professional skill-set and demeanor, opposite a total lack of ambition. Like the average wagie over there has a *wildly* higher level of professionalism and know-how about whatever it is they do compared to the average American, but there is *zero* entrepreneurial spirit. From tradies to clerk wagies to the white collars I interacted with. Everyone just wanted to slide into their predetermined slot as a cog, and expend a lot of effort and knowledge for a pitiful return.
