my dad wants me to do a cyber security masters he said he’d pay for itI have a CS degree but I’ve spent the better part of a decade behind a neet, only recently did I get a job in a completely unrelated field is it even worth it? I feel like my brain is too fried to sit in on a masters level lecture and that I’ll just flunk out. even assuming I get in and complete it, what will be my job prospects
>>61823924not worth it if you dont have the will
>>61823924If you're not feeling it, it might be a bad idea and you should rather gain 2 years of work experience
You could try watching some cybersecurity open course lectures on Youtube and give a sincere effort at keeping up with them. If you realize it's simply not something for you, thank your dad but give it to him straight.
>>61823930I want to do it, honestly it kind of interests me I just don’t think I’m capable doesn’t help that people online after some cursory research say I’d just be better of getting certs if I want to actually break into the industryI think part of my dads motivation is that I’m the only one among my siblings that didn’t pursue graduate education my brother has a phd and my sis has her masters
>>61823941Life is yours, not your dad's. How old are you?
>>61823954Early 30s
>>61823957I feel like your family is rich, but with multiple siblings I wonder what could happen to inheritance... Flip the script over and ask yourself why you're working, fulfillment or money? If money, really try to understand if further education helps.I'm 27, and for reference I got my Master's in CS at 24. I'm not from a particularly wealthy family, but they did pay for my studies and I was great in my classes, so it was worth it for me, at least to compete in my field with proper education backing me up. For now, it is paying off, but I really HAD to do it. Do you?
>>61823982do I have to no, are we rich eh we’re solidly upper middle class but not loaded exactly, I still have to work
>>61823924if you have to ask, yes you should get a master's degree in cyber crypto computers. your real life will start after that.
>>61823991I don't know you personally, but I feel like you don't really have control of your life... This is not said as a offense, but it seems like you need validation from us or your dad, but you're the master of your destiny in the end... If you take control of your life, you might do the Master. If you don't take control, honestly I wouldn't bet on it. I'm just going with vibes, please don't change your route in life because of a random anon.
>>61823924waste of time, not a masters degree that provides value in any capacity
>>61824001eh I’m not really seeking validation but I get what you’re saying, no need to apologize maybe on some level I am, but with this thread I meant to ask a more practical question of employability, perhaps I should have asked this on /g/
>>61824038Ah I see. In my opinion, and I got one, the only value in a Master's is to jump ahead in interviews, but this is mostly true if the Master is the same as the previous degree (ie CS to CS), but might be useful to learn something new.I would consider it if you really want to do it, in other words I don't agree with those that say is a waste of time. Go to /g/ if you want. Good luck anon
