any body ever worked as a crew on a cargo ship? whats it like?
>>61828689yeah me, AMA
>>61828689>sar, here in India I work breaking old ships for scrap metal. Mostly steels, I have an Ethereum address for NFT donation if there are sympathies. I don't earn a lot and I work hard.
>>61828694Tell me some sea spoopy stories
>>61828694>how many is the crew
>>61828694whats the fanny situation?
>>61831799It's all "bussy"
>>61828694tell me all about security measures, guard rotations, shift changes, weapons and training, the location and approximate value of all exotic goods aboard, distress signals and how to deactivate them, and typical port security practices. Oh and please post a full blueprint of your ships layout
>>61828694what do you actually do all day and night, in terms of work?
>>61828689real hourly rate is mid 90s americawork-life balance is non-existentshaves years off of your lifepros:net wage is upper middle class if you don't mind movingget to be an alcoholicsometimes the food is really good
>>61828689Marine engineer here. The answer to your question depends very much on what country you are in. Some people it's equal time rosters others you might do 3 months at sea with 1 month off. Fine if you're young but shit if you want a gf or wife.

>>61828689meh. may as well be a trucker if you want this "lifestyle". i can't imagine this is an easy profession to get into either considering these ships don't need a lot of people to run them.
>>61833158Seems pretty easy to get into if you can pass the drug test from what I looked into. Wish I knew about it after high school.
>>61833158I've been an OTR trucker and am currently a Merchant Mariner. I can assure you that there is no job more damaging to your health driving OTR. As an AB I stand around on the bridge for eight hours a day and do chipping and painting on deck for four hours of overtime. As as driver I was driving nine hours a day, not walking or moving at all and eating the worst garbage possible. I was super obese at 306lbs at 6'1''. Being a merchant mariner allowed me to eat healthy food all the time and allows me four hours a day to lift. The difference between these jobs is huge, especially the health benefits.

>>61833961>>61833989Looks comfy anon. How long does it take to get go from zero to first boat?Is it pulling teeth to break in or relatively straight forward? How is the anti-white discrimination in that industry?
>>61833961how much do you trust your senior officers to actually get you out alive if something serious would happen on the high seas?i am asking because the competency crisis on land is getting out of hand but at least there the worst is mass layoffs not drowningalso are hazing rituals still a thing or are you relatively unbothered?
>>61834499>How long does it take to get go from zero to first boat?It took me approximately one year for me to get my MMC, complete the SIU's apprecticeship program and get on board the Green Ridge as an apprentice. The apprenticeship program when I went though was long and extensive. They've recently shortened the length of the program so you will get to work sooner if you start now. >Is it pulling teeth to break in or relatively straight forward?I went through an apprenticeship program that was totally free. I only paid for my credentials, like my passport, TWIC, MMC, and plane ticket there. >How is the anti-white discrimination in that industry? It depends, on the ship and the union hall you sail out of. I would avoid the Jacksonville hall. >>61834521>how much do you trust your senior officers to actually get you out alive if something serious would happen on the high seas? You are required by the coast guard to know how to use immersion suits, and lifeboats. Fire and boat drills are frequent and required by SOLAS/Coast Guard and company policy. If you can't physically do certain strenuous tasks I would consider another job. Twice a year I do a physical fitness test that includes things like stepping up and down a set of stairs, crawling, carrying heavy boxes and stepping over a tall object. Everyone is required to do this but somehow big fat blobs come lumbering up the accom ladder every couple of months.
>>61834521I use to work in the salmon industry in Alaska as a deckhand and the nature of operating/maintaining a vessel generally prunes out the incompetent. Your fellow "coworkers" might be brown, a lot of the people I saw in positions that mattered were white. Blacks dislike the cold so you might not have to interact with them. As far as drowning went, if you fell off at top speed with all your gear on(layers upon layers to protect you from the cold) in that icy water you would be considered dead. They would still look for you and send out an alert and I presume actually try to find you(never saw it happen personally) but in reality it's unlikely even if we consider you not smashing your head at the keel or being slain by the propellersI only worked in Alaska, different waters obviously have different vessels, people, temperatures etc
>>61834560>If you can't physically do certain strenuous tasks I would consider another jobthat was not the question, your own physical fitness is your own responsibilitymy question was how do you regard the intellectual readiness of your captain to handle a dangerous situation as i am assuming thats a shut up and follow orders unquestionably situationcause unlike on land jobs, here you have to put your life into someones elses hands
>>61834560Thanks.This all sounds very interesting.I've worked in a few different transportation modes but never boats. I've been thinking about them boats.Just google SIU apprenticeship program?
>>61834589>my question was how do you regard the intellectual readiness of your captain to handle a dangerous situation as i am assuming thats a shut up and follow orders unquestionably situationI would trust both the Captains on the ship I work on in an emergency. I would also trust both Chief Mates to make sure all the high risk jobs I work are done safely as well. I can only speak for the ship I work on right now though. I feel like the retards who go through a maritime academy are weeded out as third mates, and only competent mates rise up to be a Chief mate or captain. >>61834611>Just google SIU apprenticeship program?Look up "My Maritime Career" and start there.
>>61834521kekit's not pirates of the caribbean, your career is more likely to end because you slipped and fell or something heavy fell on you (everything is steel) or got maimed by any of the large ropes if you're unlucky>>61834499with that attitude brown hands will lock you in an enclosed space to suffocate just as you happen to miss the required paperwork (good ending) or a group of brown hands will stab you then throw you overboard at night (bad ending)>>61834617>I feel like the retards who go through a maritime academy are weeded out as third matesyou feel wrong, it just takes time, the appropriate degree and certificates, sucking up to the higher ups and briberytl;drif you're not brown... 90% of the time just don't
