More and more people use the S&P 500 as a bank. ETFs and commission free trading did this. They see it as a place to store their money. It's no longer about being a good investment. They don't care what companies are in the index. They just expect it to go up or at least hold value. This constant flow of money gives the markets upward momentum. So anything other than forced selling doesn't drop the price significantly. It also doesn't help that the S&P has become extremely overweight on a few massive companies.At some point maybe we'll experience some long downturns that cause people to rethink this strategy. But I don't know when that will be.
