I have money saved up to buy a car cash, say a 40,000 car. I would plan to run the car for 5+ years (ideally 10).

How would I add this to my annual budget? Do I use the depreciation of the car?

I add fuel, tag, registration, maintenance, to my annual budget, but how do i factor in the depreciation of the car? Just divide it out?
>>
For the love of god don’t buy a new car for $40k. Biggest fucking waste of money.

You can get a fantastic used car for right around $10k that’ll last 10 years easily if maintained. With $40k you could buy both a new manual Nissan versa to be your winter beater and still have like $30k to burn on a really cool 90s Japanese sports car off somewhere like BAT.

New cars are so overpriced and don’t even match reliability of cars from 20 years ago. You have big ipad screens that break all the time, environmental regulation bullshit like ultra thin oil, 10k mile changes, auto start stop that’ll wear down your engine in a big way, CVT transmissions that’ll blow right after warranty. The list goes on. I would expect a modern car to need an engine or transmission rebuild right after factory warranty at this point.

Big bonus points if you learn to do your own fluid changes and brakes. That alone will save you tons of cash over your lifetime. After the first few jobs, you’ll be able to either faster than it takes to drive down somewhere and wait for them to do it.

I thought about that but I do sales and I need something decent looking, like I can't show up in too shitty of a car. I also have a one year old and want to latest safety features. For sure I will look at something 1-3 years old so it takes off the worst depreciation. I will look at some older stuff though thanks.

I got a classic Merc for $7k and bitches (random women who casually turn their heads in my direction when I drive by) love it (I assume)
>>
>>61923426
i can't afford any more women (child support kills me)

If you can’t wrap it up or pull it out dare I even say it you’re a …
>>
>>61923499
oh i know.
>>
>>61923424
No one is going to judge you if you pull up in a 2010s lexus. Plenty of the milfcore models like he rx go for around $10k locally

or if you want a slight flex without looking like a douche, 90s/00s land cruisers are well within your budget. BAT auctions are showing like 20k mint for those.

Dont buy a car cash, just get some 5 year used sub 35k mile in good condition cars aeent worth 40k youre getting scammed

New non-CVT Toyotas still have
>physical buttons for electronics and climate control
>button to turn off auto stop start
>can take 0w-20 thru 5w-30 just fine.
It's probably the only manufacturer worth buying new today
>>
>>61923135
a $40k new car is going to be much more boring than an old car that's depreciated from say $80k to now 40k. but the used car is likely less reliable and will be more expensive to maintain. unless you buy a ~8 year old lexus. that's what I would do.
>how do i factor in the depreciation of the car?
don't. if you're planning on keeping it for ten years just treat the price as the price and don't go into it expecting to get money back out.
>>
>>61923135
Buy a Toyota and run the car for 20.

Budget for consumables as you mentioned, then additionally track the market price of the car in your Net Worth calculations. It really is that shrimple

The thinner oil runs better in cold weather, the actual problem is the engine specs are insanely stringent with thinner oil.

CVT transmission fluid should be drained and filled every 4 years regardless of miles, or every 30,000 miles.

Brake fluid should be flushed and filled every 2 years. My car is going on 4 years without one, so I need to do it this year. My 2022 Toyota only has 7,000 miles on it though. The issue for me is moisture, heat and freezing temperatures, not the miles.

Synthetic engine oil should be replaced every 5,000 miles, or once a year, whichever comes first.

Red/Extended/Super-life coolant should be changed every 4 years, or every 50,000 miles.

Also, make sure to buy an actual good battery, because Toyotas stock batteries are weak garbage. My Toyota came with a 307 cca FLA battery, which is shit in the Ohio winters. I upgraded to a 535 cca AGM battery and the difference is night and day.

Sadly, I know how to change all of the fluids, but I live in an apartment complex with no garage, so I'm probably going to spend $1k+ at the dealership for them ti do it.

Agree with everything else in your post though. New cars have too many electronics and too many ways to break now. And a $40k is still ridiculous. OP can buy a new Toyota Corolla for like $25k i think.

Buy a dealer maintained pre owned Camry cash from faceberg marketjew and fuck off. No EV goybox, no CVT humiliation ritual.

thanks.

Honestly just buy a used Tesla, it's the perfect car.
- insanely powerful (~500hp but it feels faster than an ICE 500hp because of the torque curve)
- built like a tank
- zero maintenance other than tires and windshield fluid

Pussy factor is good if you get a Model S. The other models are dorky but will still turn heads if you live somewhere poor.

In 2026 you need a pretty good reason to not buy a Tesla.

I bought a factory new BMW for $50k in 2014 and I still drive it 12 years later. Great car. Love it. Have like 75k miles on it.
>>
>>61923135
just depreciate it 100% in the first year and then buy a new car the following year recapturing prior year depreciation if any
>>
>>61926459
Just buy the car and rent it to your business as a tax dodge.
>>
>>61923135
You're poor as fuck, you can't afford to blow $40k on some shit you don't need. You're going to throw away a nest egg for some stupid car that's only cool to poor people.

Come back when you have a half mill to a million in assets
>>
>>61926568
You’re poor as fuck. Come back when you have a 100k-200k income from a JOB you loser.

Is you want to spend $40k, you should get a car that is less than 5 years old but has already depreciated. There are plenty of >2022 model cars with low milage that retailed for $80k than you can now get for $40k.

As other people said, there’s also plenty of cool cars you can get for $10-15k
>>
>>61926403
my friend had one and it kept breaking, maybe an anomaly? it was also kinda shitty inside.

>>61926446
that was one thought I had, a coworker bought a 4runner new and drove it for like 15 years. maybe if keeping the car a very long time it makes sense to buy new. on the flip side, they still loose like 20% first year (maybe 15% if a toyota).

>>61926568
I make 180k per year, I think I'm within the rule of thumb for a 50-60k car purchase. I agree it's at risk of being stupid though, that's why I'm thinking it out a bit.

>>61926635
Thanks, that's what I'm sorta leaning towards. Maybe I get a 3-4 year old 4runner or something.
>>
>>61926817
Toyotas hold their value well. This is a bad thing when buying because it means that you can’t get a good deal.

Cars holding their value is a good thing when you sell or get an insurance payout though, so wether you should get a car that holds its value depends on how long you plan on keeping it
>>
>>61926634
I do, and $30MM in assets
>>
>>61925749
A lot of it is the dumb as fuck Obama era EPA regulations that effectively make cars disposable.
>>
>>61927481
True.

My area still has E-Check.
>>
>>61923135
buy a 3-5k suburban, never fix anything just oil, cheap tires and brakes, drive it until it dies. I'm going on 11 years of my $6k suburban.
>>
>>61927652
Or fix some things it lasts forever and becomes antique and starts to appreciate
>>
>>61925749
$1k for an fluid change? WTF?
Just do it at autozone or walmart parking lot if you are worried about your apartment writing you up or whatever the fuck they do.
>>
>>61926817
>they still loose like 20% first year (maybe 15% if a toyota).
So buy a 1 year old used car with less than 15k miles.
>>
>>61927727
Honestly, I just don't feel like buying and storing the equipment, or doing the labor, or ordering all of the boxes of fluids to my apartment.

But ya, it'll probably be around $800 (at the very high-end it'll be $1k), to get the coolant drained and filled + transmission fluid drained and filled + brake fluid flushed and filled.

The dealership offers pretty competitive prices compared to nearby shops. Their oils changes are actually $10 cheaper than most other shops around here, but their other fluid changes are probably much higher.
>>
Mazda is trying to get rid of their 2025 cx-5s. you can get a premium plus trim level which has lots of bells and whistles for around $33k. They have traditional automatic transmissions (no CVT), timing chains instead of timing belts, naturally aspirated. they aren't the best on gas but they should last you at least 10 years if not more. it doesnt make sense to buy a used toyota with 30k miles in 2 years that some asshole totally mashed on just to save a couple grand vs. new
>>
>>61930457
i'll look at that, thank you. i'm going to go to the mazda dealership. and yeah, on the toyotas, especially mid level 4runners, it doesn't seem like a great deal to buy them used. i imagine most of these get discounted too (especially not trd pro or whatever the bro truck version is)
