The networking advice they give to high school and college kids is hilarious. Nobody wants to "network" with some nameless fungible newbie. If you're starting from zero and don't have some kind of edge like a rich uncle or a gigachad face, then networking means befriending other entry level people and keeping up with them so they'll remember you after they move to a new company and get promoted. It takes years, even decades to pay off. If you're lucky you might also impress a manager who will let you ride his coattails as he moves up the corporate ladder, but don't count on that.
