It seems clear to me that if the function of gold and silver is to be insurance, people would sell it in situations where they need insurance, thus people will sell gold and silver when something bad happens because that is when they need money. Think about all the people in Dubai who suddenly need to get money to leave. They will sell gold to get that money. The mistake is thinking that people care about the paper value of the metal at the moment something bad happens, they don't care, they aren't trying to get the best price, they just need money now.Unconditional sellers will always drive down the price, but you can think of this as people cashing in their insurance. Over time if the war drags on the price goes back up because more people buy insurance than try to cash it in.
