Though it did result in the Democrats saddling the US with the 55mph national speed limit.1) Gasoline was rationed to a certain number of gallons per purchase, and you could only buy gasoline on days determined by your license plate number, e.g. if your plate ended in 1-2 you could only buy on Monday, if it ended in 3-4 you could only buy on Tuesday, etc.
