Until full staking rolls out with slashing and rewards, the nodes don’t have to hold large link balances as collateral. They just get paid in link and can immediately dump back on the market themselves, meaning the link purchased by chainlink customers to pa for services may be right back on the sell side of the books as soon as the transaction is completed.

At the end of the day, there's no need to buy Link tokens, and the pool of Link tokens out on the market will set there collecting dust.
