Got a job paying ~12k net in VHCOL city. If I stay at the job, my income will steadily increase. It is impossible to find anything within decent commutable distance for less than 4k in that area that's not a complete run down shit hole or a 300sqft studio. I found a place for 4.6k that I really like but it will be 38% of my net pay (exc. utilities).

I know this goes against the usual PF advice, but I value my living space a lot and after working 70-80hrs the last thing I want is be depressed in some shitty apartment. On the other hand, I'm sacrificing so much of my time to give a ton of it away to the landlord. Thoughts?

if your commute is over 1.25 hours then just do it. ive been in ur same shoes didnhalf commute half live next to work and ten years later now i dont regret renting nearby.

commute absolutely kills your soul
>>
well, it's $4.6k/month down the drain. only you can decide if it's worth it
>>
God damn thats a lot. Just rent a shitbox. Burning 50k a year just for rent is killing your long term prosperity and will just delay retirement
>>
Live in a shared 2 bedroom 1 bathroom house for less money. High rent eats your savings and commuting eats your time which is worse. If you are young then go for 4 roommates 1 bathroom and have fun partying with your roommates.
> t. lived in a shared 2 bed 1 bath house for years until roommate got tired of listening to me jerkin it and started slamming doors, then i moved out to a ~400sf studio

What job / industry?

Seems to be a lot of room between supreme luxury penthouse and shitbox. Landlords are generally amenable to you fixing things up so just focus on the area. The neighbors and that.
>>
>working 70-80hrs
You're a wagie who will barely be home except to sleep. Just rent a cheap room to sleep in.

SF? NYC? The price tag is worth it if you have both leisure time and disposable income to enjoy them.

Considering the “70-80” hour work weeks, that’s unsustainable. If you do that more than once a year, you’ll eventually want to throw yourself off the balcony of the nicest penthouse $12k could afford. Your goal in life with a salary is to work as little as possible.

Yes, any commute is terrible. If you’re taking public transit in those two cities, it’s doable to live in an affordable area. I credit great public transit for giving me time to study and let my mind wander early in my career as a tech professional. An extra hour in your work day isn’t going to be worse than having no savings.

Here’s my warning - coastal high pressure industries like tech, law, and finance are churn and burn. They promise dreams, drain the youth and vitality, then kick the once-eager husks to the curb once a pulse of resistance is felt. I have seen many people fall from grace and unsuccessfully cope with drugs, women, flashy cars, nice apartments, and all of those markers of a successful life. Save money to prepare for layoffs and your next move. Don’t be a sucker and spend your life in a VHCOL without getting all you can.

Retard.

My counter to all of this is what's the point of making money if you aren't spending it? Sure, don't be a dumbfuck who doesn't save anything and wastes money but having a good place to live is not wasting money for me. There's also a social capital element of having a nice place where you can invite people. I know I will be successful and make more money and I feel like if anything spending more here will encourage me to find additional ways to make more.

If you find a partner who isn't a deadbeat then she could potentially pay half of the rent. Have that thought ever crossed your mind? If she is a catch maybe you will have to settle for paying 70% of the rent, still a major discount plus a wet hole bonus.

in the current stage of my life i'd rather fuck foids before I move to a city where most women don't have fucked up liberal values

Why do you care about their values if they pay rent and give access to their wet hole? The only problems are minor stuff like snoring and sharing a bed in general, and having to occasionally wait on her when you need the bathroom. Just find one that doesn't do any drugs, including alcohol and nicotine. There are plenty of these.

If youre White you need to leave the city immediately. If youre not, then I guess just continue enjoying your destruction of Western civilization while it still lasts. This is financial advice

I love advice like this. Yes I'm white and yes I fucking hate what's happening to the Western world. I'm extremely racist and hate the modern way of living. That said - tell me the other option? Move to Asia to live with peasants? Nah I'm good. I'll make my money and eventually retire to a ranch. For now this is a necessary evil. I fucking hate it sure, I wish our society wasn't as destroyed as it is but alas.
