>Gerontocracy has always thrived in undemocratic places—Communist people’s republics, Gulf monarchies—where only death could pry power from the ruling elders. American gerontocracy is exceptional for being freely elected. Donald Trump will soon be an octogenarian, and is president in part because the preceding octogenarian, Joe Biden, did not want to admit his senescence. The median senator is 65, and the oldest, 92-year-old Chuck Grassley, has not ruled out running for reelection in 2028. The typical general-election voter is a spry 52, but in primary elections, which decide the majority of political contests, that number rises to 59. Half of all the money donated to political campaigns comes from Americans age 66 and older.
>The pathologies of the housing market are one reason. The typical home today costs five times the median annual income, up from 3.5 times the median annual income in 1984. Boomers got lucky: When they were young, they could afford to buy houses that then appreciated fantastically in value. But that luck was arguably manufactured by Washington, which engineered the rise of 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages and created tax deductions for mortgage interest and property taxes.
>These government subsidies still exist today. But even with them, younger Americans cannot buy houses at the same rate that Boomers did.
>Older generations used the levers of government to create this situation. In high-cost cities, the building of new homes and apartment complexes is often derailed in local planning and zoning-board meetings.

WE NEED TO TAX THESE FAGGOTS AND ROB THEM OF THEIR MONEY AND GIVE IT TO BROWN PEOPLE BEFORE THEIR WHITE CHILDREN GET ANY OF IT!! THIS IS VERY PROBLEMATIC!

White children won't get any of it. Asset prices are driven by boomer demand; it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Once boomers die, revaluation will occur, and much of those gains will be revealed to have been a shared fiction, designed to speak the should of productivity to bolster money living standards. You'll work harder than boomers for less, because you'll be paying if their debts.

>younger Americans cannot buy houses at the same rate that Boomers did
They can though, they just have to be willing to buy the sort of houses the Boomers were buying at their age.
>>
>>62114724
Do they have to title it "An Oligarchy of Old People" because the average Atlantic reader is too stupid to recognize a gerontocracy?
>>
>>62114926
Chill out anon. They needed it to meet the 500-word minimum.

Young people would just need to refuse to work. Or take power somehow.

It's funny how I always see these weird ass posts knowing my white parents are millionaires and have said they're spending it all.

No retard, boomers need to die and people who defend them can die with them.

honestly true. millenials and zoomers arent getting married or having kids anyway, they dont need some 2400sq ft mcmansion in the suburbs. they need a 3 room shotgun shack w/ an outhouse
>>
>>62116517
I wouldn't go nearly that far, but when I was a kid in the 70's, we (parents and 2 children) lived in a 1250 sq ft house (3 bdr, 1 1/2 bath) and it was fine. The first house my wife & I bought was very similar. You absolutely do not need a mcmansion in a gated community, that's a "nice to have", not a "must-have".

>the only alternative to Gerontocracy is to raise taxes and give it all to brown people xd
is this a bot post or genuine mental illness?
it's also ironic because.. you know that Trump supports brown immigration, right? he has said that it's OK, as long as they come from india.
