I'm struggling to decide how much and how to structure an emergency fund. Right now I have 1.5 years expenses in short term tbills (essentially cash +3.5% interest). It's a lot but I think for my job in the tech industry 1 years expenses is sensible as well as it has to cover anything on my house.
Once rates go to zero it will be hard to justify keeping that much cash. Should I put some of it in schd? Just consider the missed gains like the price of insurance? Make the emergency fund just 1 year expenses?

I don't usually try to get below 50k in my checking account
>>
>>62177510
Why not at least put it into a HYSA? When are you ever going to need to pull 50k straight from checking?
>>
>>62177520
I just go off the vibes man
>>
>>62177510
For me I'm talking 72k so pretty similar. I could bring it to 48k being 1 year expenses. Any less seems foolish but it sucks getting eaten by inflation and also will suck worse when rates are 0.

>>62177520
This. Mines in snsxx. With margin I can wire as much as I need same day. Lots of good hysa if you want a traditional account. Checking is also risky if a shady business or thief gets access, better to have not much money there for them to take.
>>
>>62177505
I just wish there was a good medium low risk option.
>bonds
are high risk and likely going to zero
>>
>>62177520
Recommend me a good HYSA.
>>
>>62177566
Just buy snsxx in your brokerage
>>
>>62177566
>>62177583
It will also be state tax exempt unlike a hysa, but you have to know/collect the evidence for that when you file.

>>62177510

Your money is going to be worth less and less every single year, 'man'.

That's not how that works unless your account is with Charles Schwab.

I have 300k in crypto and 40k in my bank
>>
>>62177909
Yeah you can, it depends on your bank though if they give you a decent interest rate
>>
>>62177505
I just use a credit card as an emergency fund. I can just pay off the credit card within 30 days by selling stock so I don't have to pay interest.

It's good to be liquid. nothing wrong with having a stack of cash that can be deployed at a moments notice.

That.. sounds utterly retarded. I hope for the best for you anon.
>>62178051
This is the least terrible alternative ITT, still very risky of course if you get into the very situation where an emergency fund pays off, e.g. no income.

How can you sleep at night?
>>62178147
Money market funds are entirely liquid though and typically offered as core positions.
>nothing wrong with having a stack of cash
Aside from constant purchasing power erosion and zero benefits, yes, you're right.

Way too much cash drag.

Yes. Be an adult - or your closest approximation thereof - and log on to Schwab's website and open an account.

My net is 500k in stocks and crypto and I genuinely keep my bank account at sub $1000. Your 50k isn't even in something like QQQ, what a retard. I'm not taking any of your advice.

It makes people like you seethe when I tell them, good enough of a reason for me
>>
>>62179825
Its okay, If I really need shekels for an emergency, ill just rob some fat fuck.
>>
>>62179834
Yeah what a retard. I keep a $2k cash buffer in HYSA, and $18k Emergency Fund HYSA. Any more is opportunity cost.
>>
>>62177505
6 months of expenses in a HYSA or on DeFi. Invest the rest in S&P 500 ETF. Go for bitcoin or individual stocks if you're feeling adventurous. It's not that hard.

I just mooch off my wife when I'm unemployed.
All the house bills are paid by her from her separate checking account. Joint accounts are illegal and impossible in my country.

Here's what you do:
1. Get a Schwab brokerage account (you can also transfer your IRA there)
2. Put all your savings into the brokerage account
3. Apply for margin
4. Dump all cash into SWVXX or similar
5. When you need cash, you can get instant withdrawals using margin. Just sell securities to cover it.

This way your cash doesn't rot away and you get the convenience of essentially having instant cash on hand. You can even withdraw from the brokerage account using a Schwab debit card.
Learn to use debt in a clever way.
