AMERICA IS SO BACK

For decades, pharmacies were a key part of American life, serving as places where people could pick up prescriptions, groceries, toiletries, and everyday essentials. Today, that system is rapidly declining. Thousands of pharmacies across the United States have closed, leaving many communities with fewer healthcare options and creating “pharmacy deserts,” especially in rural areas where the nearest pharmacy may be over an hour away.

Chains like CVS and Walgreens once expanded aggressively and dominated the market, generating billions in prescription revenue. However, changing shopping habits have weakened their business. Many customers now buy household products from Amazon or Walmart, where prices are often lower. Drugstores also frustrated shoppers by locking up common items like toothpaste and deodorant due to theft concerns, making shopping less convenient.

At the same time, pharmacies face staffing shortages, employee burnout, rising operating costs, and shrinking profits. Pharmacists and store workers report overwhelming workloads and understaffed locations, leading to long wait times and declining customer service.

Another major issue is the growing influence of pharmacy benefit managers, or PBMs. These middlemen control drug pricing and reimbursements between insurers, manufacturers, and pharmacies. Critics argue PBMs reduce pharmacy profits while increasing costs for consumers, making it difficult for both major chains and independent pharmacies to survive.

Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy, Walgreens reported massive losses, and even CVS has shifted focus toward healthcare services and insurance rather than traditional retail pharmacy. Experts warn that continued closures could seriously reduce access to medications and healthcare, especially for low-income and rural Americans.
