Yeah some anon posted a really good write up someone had done about all of this, and a really interesting point that was made was that hyperscalers are absolutely planning on this. Basically they are pricing in a crash in their long-term strategy, basically putting up as much as they can and writing out the economic Fallout counting on a bailout of some kind. Then when the dust has settled they will have data centers.
Pretty gross if you ask me

Another interesting point which I don't hear brought up is how the influence of local models will shift the landscape in the coming years. Most people think of local models as some Pet Project on a relatively small computer. But what happens when models become efficient enough and Technology becomes strong enough to where businesses and companies can have all the compute they need in house? Why would, for instance, a law firm send any of its material to anyone else when they can have complete ownership of their data?
What happens when people but especially businesses don't need the data center anymore?

>Why would, for instance, a law firm send any of its material to anyone else when they can have complete ownership of their data?
Because the consumer side of the big data exchange doesn't and never has valued their own data. "People" willingly gave away data for years (and continue to) to a Google spinoff company because they had an app that overlayed cartoon pokemon characters onto their camera phone. A large law firm is no different just because you might think they should be smarter than that. The consumer will never properly value their data even when they're buying it back from someone who farmed it from them for free. It's simply beyond their human ability to comprehend.

That's probably true, I just question whether the consumer demand will be so great as to justify all the compute of a data center. Pretty much anyone with substantial token usage will pivot to a free local model which will become more and more accessible. Besides I feel like the vast majority of the business model is selling Cloud compute and services to businesses

>>
>>62493405
I just don't think that things will remain static and as they are. As Frontier models improve so too will the free local models. Any business with an IT department will absolutely be doing their shit in house, and consumers will opt for the free models whatever they are which will be 100% local models in the near future. It will be an app like the calculator on a smartphone.
Hyperscalers are going to have to charge money in order to recoup the capex, but I think that the exponential Improvement of local models is a dynamic that doesn't really come into the conversation too often mostly because people are assuming that local models will be what they are now forever.

Yes, possibly, especially if they value privacy, but I think you’re dead wrong about consumers using free models on local hardware. The good models just use way too much compute. Either the hardware needs to get 100x faster (realistically hardware is improving like .5% per year now) or the model needs to get 100x more efficient which seems just as unlikely.

They have a lease currently and an option to expand the lease. This was signed at the start of the year before AMD rallied. It's pure speculation but AMD talks a lot about Data center revenue and inference being the future of revenue generation. Riot owns data centers in prime locations for inference and avoiding the whole nimby movement on datacenters. It's pure speculation. No sources.

Models can get smaller and more efficient by orders of magnitude if they are tailored to the application realm. A model for electric circuit design needs no knowledge about world history or pop music trivia, things like that.
>>
>>62493470
>but I think you’re dead wrong about consumers using free models on local hardware.
the local models are amazing rn. you can run a model on a consumer GPU that totally replaces the need for cloud models for alot of usecases just as a side effect of owning a gaming PC. the posts about AI i see by smiggers make me realize that even people interested in the topic from the perspective of investing are not anywhere near as knowledgeable as the autists actually dabbling with these hands on.

>Kimi K3 doesn’t change anything,

Except it does. It changes everything.
Anthropic talked big game about their model being hyper intelligent and so dangerous US government started regulating it.
Here come the Chinks with an open model version that matches and in some cases mogs Fable and now any company can drop half a mil on hardware and have a local Fable and the progress isn't stopping here.
Also any talk about Chinks just distilling Western models is out of the window, they proved that they can compete and even win on their own terms.
US who's entire economy rests on this sector is seriously fucked unless they re-evaluate their entire approach to AI and throw safeties out of the window and start actually competing, but good luck with that approach as we know that removing the safety slop approach will not happen.
Kimi and the next versions can genuinely fuck over the entire US AI sector.
