So the Fed chair signaled a probable September rate hike (those well-versed in Fedspeak recognized this, hence the Polymarket odds jump) but because algos and brain damaged day traders didn't hear the words "rate hike" stocks are pumping like this is good news

Chevron dey work through joint ventures with Venezuela national oil company, PDVSA. Dem already dey produce roughly 280,000 barrels every day gross, mostly heavy and extra-heavy crude. Yes, 100%. People in this thread don't want to believe it but Warsh would not have gotten up there and talked about how great the economy's doing while pointing to inflation being above target levels (and closing with saying that the Fed has an obligation to act if inflation remains high) if he wasn't trying to prep institutional investors for a hike.

Ultimately, things like the overwhelming pressure of the bond market or year-to-year inflation stats are going to influence Fed decision making way more than the possibility of a market dip or Trump getting embarrassed and sperging out on Truth Social.

>>
>>62638817
Not happening. I'd rather Warsh just come out and be honest and say that wantint to bring it down to a 2% inflation target is like having an Irishman say theyre going to cut down the drinking back and shoot for a 2 beer a night drinking target. Not happening. 3% seems to actually be the natural resting point for inflation when times are good historically, the 2% goal is silly.
>>
>>62638833
Bond investors understandably want a stronger commitment to raising rates but the Fed is notoriously cagey about verbally committing to anything, and Warsh is a particularly extreme example of that. Still think there will be a September hike though.

Look, when it comes to influencing fiscal policy the bond market is the strongest force on earth. The US economy is a giant house of cards and it collapses if investors lose faith in treasury bonds.

If the bond market wants rate hikes, then sooner or later (probably sooner) there will be rate hikes.

I personally think Yellen was the worst we've had in my life at least. While she did raise rates, it wasn't enough. Make no mistake I think Jerome Powell also fucked this up early on in his tenure as chair. The idea being we should have been getting a relatively recovered market okay with higher rates again, rather than coddling them with infinite QE like we did.
Yellen raised rates but it was a paltry amount really. It helped contribute to a ton of zombie companies that pretty much existed only because of extremely cheap loans they could subsist off of. She personally argued against the "everything bubble".

The Fed is reevaluating the arbitrary 2% inflation target when measured against debt to GDP and interest payments on that debt. Ultimately the purpose of hiking would be to cool off fiscal spending to make interest payments the signal to stop spending but we’re past the point of no return on that. Fiscal/monetary repression are the only paths out of this, given that the real economy (read: interest rate sensitive sectors) are barely treading water while the financial sector booms. Ultimately hiking rates would start a recession which would guarantee inflation cooling but the alternative to that is growing the economy faster than inflation and disregarding the arbitrary target. The only reason they’d hike is if they care about wagies not having wages keep up with inflation, which I don’t believe the admin cares about. Warsh’s job is to make it seem like he’s going to do something while sitting on his hands waiting for the data to fix itself (oil price goes down, beef prices go down due to imports, etc)

Thank you for saying it this way. Basically, his job is to run out the clock for Trump to try to get SOMETHING done with respect to Hormuz/oil so that inflation number can see a dip. Trump desperately wants rates to stay down, but he's been doing virtually everything he can to fuck that up. Warsh just needs to keep the boat pointed in the right direction so the waves can pass.

WHY IS GASOLINE MOONING?
>>
>>62638879
Is the conclusion that a rate hike is coming because the market is pricing in inflation? The intervention against long term bonds did nothing. So maybe hiking interest rates will be more effective? Essentially you'd raise the cost of short term debt by hiking rates, which would be deflationary, and bring down the cost of long term bonds with that deflationary pressure. Which is what was causing the long term yields to rise.

hiking in this market doesn't even make sense to me

first of all it implies inflation is being caused primarily by consumer spending habits which, there is an argument, hasnt been the case since covid for many sectors

second, there is an implication that decreased income would affect consumer spending habits, which, also, arguably hasn't been the case since covid

so what does a rate hike really do? in the current market, it just creates a dip, then nothing happens, consumers continue to get fucked, inflation probably rises as companies increase prices to make up for decrease in consumption (even if there isn't any).

i think there was a chance where rate hikes could have fixed things a few years ago, but that ship has maybe sailed, we traded a recession for what appears to be a crash

>Nearly 30,000 pounds of raw beef imported from Argentina and sold in Texas and Florida is under recall, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as questions swirl around the beef.

>The beef recall notice points to missed import re-inspections as the cause, but the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service classified the recalled beef as a Class I health hazard, the agency’s highest risk category. The recall notice did not mention any specific contaminants.
I smell a cover up!
>The recall comes amid heightened attention on foreign beef imports. Last Friday, President Trump announced on Truth Social a plan to allow up to 300,000 pounds of foreign beef over the next 90 days to be sold at 25 percent less than current market prices.

>Dr. Darin Detwiler, a nationally recognized food safety advocate, professor, and policy advocate who did not want his face on camera, pointed to the timing of the announcement and the recall. “This is where we get political, 24-48 hours about the administration approving meat coming from Argentina at a time that there’s a major recall of some 30000 pounds of meat because of failure to inspect it,” he said.

Long term bonds for corporations are over 6% now. And that's investment grade. That heavily drags down on corporate earnings right at the peak of this AI data center roll out. Right when we're doing a multi trillion dollar heavy debt fueled investment, staking our economy on a manhatten level project, these long term rates are at an all time high. That disastrous timing. And it's also hiking up mortgages at the worst time as well.

The government already tried to intervene and bought a few billion of long term bonds to test the waters and it did nothing. The bond yields on these 10/20/30 year bonds are high not because of simple supply and demand, but because financial institutions see long term entrenched inflation. So even if America intervenes the rate will just hike right back up. And they did. So they needed to try something else instead of Japan's method of "keep intervening and maybe after the 38th intervention it'll work".

So no they are, essentially, doing the same thing in principal. But instead of selling short term bonds to buy long term bonds (hiking short term yields and lowering long term with buying pressure changing price and so yield) they want to raise short term bonds with a rate hike in order to create deflationary pressure. Which should then in term lower long term bonds by cracking down on inflation now.

i can see the logic in that at an economic theory level, but at the same time, this exemplifies the split between "economy" as an ecosystem whose primary population is corporations -- versus "economy" as a system designed as a habitat for consumers

it makes sense to have the elemental unit be a corporation, as those are the movers of the market. yet at the same time, when the two most important metrics of the market are "valuations" and "borrowing rates", what you have are just derivatives being treated as primary units.

underneath everything, a consumer base exists, and the cause of inflation is a prioritization of corporations over human beings -- fundamentally, as long as this attitude exists, inflation will not fall in a meaningful way.

it just feels to me that when the solution is turning the dial on a singular massive systemic switch to affect multiple nuanced, specifically caused symptoms, not only do you not directly target the real causes of these problems, by becoming dependent on this broad stroke movement, you run the risk that the dial will be pushed too much one way or the other, and end up destroying the consumer base you continuously ignored for years.

the only way this makes sense to me is if, the administration does not actually want to solve underlying issues, but just pretend they do.

so what i mean is, like in your explanation, the biggest driver for a hike is corporations dont want to have interest rates this high. thats fine, but maybe the government should pay more attention to the potential market crash in several years as a result of overly relying on these broad temporary fixes that could obliterate the consumer base?
