Asuka's mother is Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu (or Sohryu?) and her name is a combo of German blimp I believe and the Japanese Battleship Soryu. Kyoko worked in a German division that would later becoming Nerv called Gehirn. Her mom is blonde in manga form and I THINK she is both German and Japanese. Asuka also has German guardians prior to moving to Japan. It's revealed in an episode when Asuka answered the phone from Germany in the original series and spoke German.
