Why is it always cringe and reeks of hubris and arrogance from the person cosplaying? It feels highly narcissistic.

why make a thread when you answered your own question in the OP?

Because it's always schizo as fuck
They don't have a simple and appealing character.
Every character that exists for some anime or whatever was a character that someone came up with in their head and could just as well have been an oc. But these guys don't make characters like that, they make horrible abominations with a million trinkets and details, tattoos, necklaces, rings, multicoloured eyes, multicoloured hair, bat wings with angel wings, boots with belts attached to them and necklaces on those belts.
And not to mention the lore behind these oc's, they can't settle for anything coherent like "oh my character is wizard, he casts spells" It has to be something a demi trans-god hyper dimensional exiled king, cursed by the embodiment of chaos itself who was once his girlfriend, and every full moon he turns into a wolf with 6 dicks, all of which point to the closest milennium item.

Have your free (you)

OC cosplay is fine, but if OP is talking about picrel in the OP. Steampunk psuedo furries are among the most annoying faggots out there

cosplaying an oc isn't inherently hubris. Every cosplayer goes in knowing they want attention from a cosplay crowd fandom. I dressed as Nathan Drake and got a lot of compliments. then I cosplayed as an obscure Resident evil character and more people thought I was Leon and didn't get much recognition at all.
So many people cosplay now to act as pseudo models, especially girls with big tits. Gaining a following to become a micro celebrity.

steampunk is always cringe

If your OC was actually good, other people would be cosplaying it instead of you

Because it is someone so self important (usually with main character syndrome) that they literally devote their time and money to shoehorn their own mediocre creation into a franchise you know and love and make THEIR lackluster creation YOUR problem. They also tend to show up to meetups for said fandoms and shove their retarded creation down everyone’s throat.

The only exception to the “OC cosplays are cringe” rule is if you’re cosplaying a character in armor whose canon explanation allows for hundreds if not thousands of unique permutations of said armor that could still feasibly fit within the canon of the show/movie/game. Some examples would be Spartans from Halo, Power Armor from Fallout, Helldivers from Helldivers, Mandalorians from Star Wars and Space Marines from 40k.

Because you're encountering them at the wrong events as their OC. Their fault, not yours. Conventions are about known properties and recognizable characters, but they want to dress up and be noticed for something no one knows or cares about there. What they need to go to is a larp event or in the case of ops pic one of those steampunk specific cons where everyone dresses like that. Or a furry con for furries. It's just a matter of context.

I considered doing it. A comic I created that was basically a Double Dragon/Final Fight story. The character wears a blue and yellow letterman jacket, white shirt, jeans, and blue Chucks. I figured what’s the harm since I dress like that anyway. I know damn well no one is gonna get it. And I’m fine with that.

furries always get banished to a small corner in the anime con anyway
