I moved to Oregon in January and I've really been missing cons. Seems like Kumoricon is the closest thing to local for me (still 3 hours away but that's a lot closer than the Bay Area or Seattle) and it's probably about time to book hotels etc. if I'm gonna go. Is it any good? Am I likely to have a decent time there as a late-30s guy who's been going to cons for almost 25 years and probably won't know anybody there?

Definitely drop by, especially if it's the closest one you got. I'm also curious what "type" of con are used to? This feels noticeably different between the younger attendees and a mixed big con/small con atmosphere

I've been to all kinds, everything from Anime Expo (this year was the first I've missed since 2001) to midsize stuff like Fanime and AnimeLA to small stuff like the Arizona cons, SF Cherry Blossom, etc.

I guess my main fear is being way too old to go alone, smaller local cons tend to attract younger audiences and sounds like you're saying that's true of Kumori as well.

PortlandAnon here, yeah theres a lot of young people but id say its pretty well balanced between kids, teens adults and older adults

Cool. Guess I'll book a hotel soon then. Probably just gonna do one night, think Friday or Saturday is better there?

Saturday is generally the most lively, also it's WAY too late for an affiliated hotel, they sold out months ago so you're gonna be paying full price assuming anything nearby even has any rooms available.

Hyatt still has king rooms in the con block as far as I can see. Those usually hang around at cons since people are usually rooming together and don't want a single bed. I can swing $229 for one night though. What's the story in terms of nightlife there?

Outside of the con there's fucking nothing, maybe a couple bars in the vicinity but I just drink in my room with friends. Finding a room party is your best bet for off-campus shenanigans. If you run into a dude who looks like Scott Ian introduce yourself.

Yeah I meant room parties etc. Wasn't sure if there was much of a scene or not and whether there was a designated public late-night spot like AX has with the Westin or Fanime has with the park or whatever. Hopefully I can finagle myself into something.

I'll say hi if I see you, I'll probably be wearing a cowboy hat or something motorcycle-related.

There were two gull parties last year. Since I was involved with one and the other group posted about theirs, we mixed them together on Saturday. Pretty high turn out too

Nice. Hopefully I can make my way to some of those parties.
