these are my attempts so far in mask making

>1 is from an existing mask used as a model wrapped in plastic, only 2 layers of paper
>2 existing mask too but with more complex shape (nose) I wrapped it with plastic but the shape is hard to stick too with this technic
>3 a model wrapped in plastic, I just achieved the third layer and I'll go for a fourth
>4 model wrapped in plastic, same model as 8, 3 layers
>5 my first ever attempt, I used a balloon and so many layers maybe 6 no gesso but spray painted
>6 same model as 8 but worse than 4 but hey it feels like it has a shape of an owl so we will see, only 3 layers but 4 layers of gesso onto it
>7 nothing more than 1 except 4 layers to make it stronger
>8 I used brown tape to cover the whole model so I can finally glue my layers according to the shape

so I have few questions, how come 6 is looking like a cheap cardboard thing while 5 doesn't really?
is it the matte effect of the gesso or the complex and irregular shape? Is 8 going to look like this as it perfectly shaped or not? how about 3 and 7 then?

I want to avoid by all means to my masks to look like paper, wrinkles or rough surfaces don't bother me that much if the whole mask doesn't look like cardboard or paper

any idea to avoid this without using expansive resins?

Sandpaper

after the paper layers or after gesso layers?

Paper
You can also use filler and sandpaper over and over to try and get your mask as smooth as possible

I don't have any filler, I thought gesso would work as a filler but it's not really working as expected
