I don't know where to ask about this. I guess it counts as cosplay. Reddit's Renaissance fair board deleted me, so here I am.
My friend and I are planning to go to our first Renaissance fair this month in Texas. We want to dress up for it, but I'm at a loss. This being our first event I don't want to go full force and $100+ on a single tunic, but the $50 complete "costume" on Amazon worries me.
My friend is big (6ft. 3xl), and I use a cane and have an eye patch; both guys.
I appreciate any tips y'all can give. Thanks

The fat fuck could go as henry 8th and you could prob get a pegleg once your diabetes cause that foot to fall off and you could complete a pirate cosplay with that eyepatch.

Dude... I was in a car wreck.
Anyway, where do you find these clothes where they're not either tissue paper quality or a whole month's pay?

Also pardon slow/low replies; the CAPTCHA has gotten really hard for me these days.

cheap, quick, good quality. pick two. you can't have all 3. you're either going to get tissue paper quality or pay for something decent.

I understand; it's mostly because this is our first one and I'm not sure we'll ever do it again. So spending a few hundred on a costume feels unwise.
Have any of you been to one before? How much would we stand out if we went in cheap outfits or street clothes?

Go thrifting and do some easy crafting with the stuff you cut up - will save you money versus buying Burgschneider or other quality brands plus you can go more custom. To get ideas check out this vid on thrift hacks for renn faire outfits: https://youtu.be/SY_Zudmts9I?si=ibueZkrocSgPi-OF

Wizard... I hadn't considered that. I'm pretty sure I have some natural wood canes, and a robe would be cheaper than a full costume.

Thanks a bunch for this. We only have a Goodwill around here, but I'm going to go look now.

Most attendees are going to be in street clothes...you won't stick out. I do agree with >>10961886 though, be a wizard.

I second this post >>10961911

I think the secret to a good ren faire costume is to build slowly. Buy or make one or two quality items each year until you have a great costume. For a pirate, start with a hat. Then add a coat. Then breeches and boots... and so on.

That said, I totally think you should be a wizard. Get a robe and a staff. If you go next year, add a beard and a medallion.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna talk to my friend about not dressing up this time and starting up a wardrobe there.
Thanks again; you've all been a big help.

nice to have a thread on cgl that's semi relevant, actually helps someone, and isn't full of softcore porn
