Has anybody else noticed the calgary idol scene sometimes Edmonton being very elitist and full of the same acts? I know of a few people who are being silently ignored and accused of things to get them rejected from cons. It seems to be a handful of people in that scene including longtime member delegara and some Megan who seems to be friends with her. Watched a few local idol festivals recently and have just noticed the same boring ass love live acts performed by invidviduals poorly attempting to hide their pregnancy and are way to old to be dancing love live. To a few new but unoriginal content groups ie: lots of vocaloid PJSK umamusume ect. Honestly as someone whos watched the same players have ultimate power in that scene since 2018 im loosing hope for idols who are bullied and or wrongfully ostracized out of that community. I also have old recorded footage of delegara revoking a group an award at otafest idol festival 2024 that can be shared if yall want.

How are these kaigai idols running their own one man lives and independent shows without conventions? Do they actually sell that well. I keep seeing them from idols that arent that popular.

>>10972232i had such a blast personally! it really is amazing to see idol culture be so successful in the states. i know some people were speculating about if it really sold out or not, but i can confirm the entire GA floor was full. almost everyone in the venue bought merch and cheki after, so i’d say it was a huge win. chichi did nyanderful life which is one of my favorite songs, and both of them had great vocal stamina.

Idol concerts and idol culture are still a very tiny niche of a niche. Almost comparable to where anime was in the 90's, compared to mainstream scifi and comics. Right now I only really see them advertised through instagram and twitter posts which doesn't carry much reach. Maybe putting up posters on telephone poles could draw in some normies, i don't know. Right now a large fraction of the audience is friends of the performers or other performers, and wotas thare are more in it for a chance to be yakkai and act out than to support specific acts. I don't think this can change until the community grows some more. Even though the last 5 years have seen a huge surge in tourism to japan it has not translated into people getting familiar with idol culture beyond maybe stereotype maid cafes. People look at ads for lives or performance recordings and the thing they think is "high school talent show" and not "up and coming independent artist doing cool thing". Esepcially wjen the presentation includes things like the usual poofy frilly costumes, but not to say that they should change wardrobes. It's something that a western audience has to re-learn to be comfortable with after decades of being told that being cute is uncool or childish. You kinda have to overcome that prejudgement through sheer force of personality. Look at how Cutie Street won over Korea with one TV performance, that's the kind of energy kaigai idols need to aim for to grow the community.

Every weekend there are local bands, touring acts, game tournaments, small and large cons, and a hundred other distractions trying to get your butt in a seat. Kaigai idols don't yet have the reach and visibility to have people casually show up like they might at a bar where a friend's band is playing open mic night. It's still an IFYKY thing until idol culture seeps more into the public consciousness.
