fathomably based
>>21585820Somewhat based

i'm getting a lot of good data from this threadbut why does anago taste weird and different?
Its the least gay thing to come out of japan
>>21585943One is river eel, one is sea eel. Unagi, freshwater eel, is fattier and stronger flavored, which is why it holds up well to grilling and that sticky sweet sauce.
>>21586013oh i didn't know about the fat content, but that makes sensethanks for the info
I tried eel once and did not like it at all. Texture like snot. Was it supposed to be like that?
>>21586120What? They taste and look like white fish.
>>21586120Unagi needs aggressive sear, or else you get that experience. Stick to anago if not at an upscale sushi place. Ask for Ponzu sauce if you do get one like that to cut the gamey-fat issue.
I make a southern fusion of this dish by using catfish and sweet barbecue sauce on top of sticky rice. Give this idea a try and you won't regret it.
>>21586305that sounds delicious. what greens did you pair it with? take any pics?
>>21585820Unbelievably based
Is yellowtail based?
>>21585820it's cringe
>>21586428NOOOO>>21586425yes hamachi is based
>>21585820Wasted on sushi.
Tuna is surprisingly cringe.
>>21585820Unagi is a state of mind
>>21585820Basically based.
>>21586136See that's what I was expecting from the images I'd seen but it was very much not. >>21586139It was an airport sushi place which may have been the problem. I'll give it another try somewhere better than, thanks.
>>21585820that's lasagna
>>21586305I got some frozen unagi I plan to make into a bastardized eel and potato salad.

I don't like eel regardless of how it's prepared. One of the few whole foods I refuse to eat. >>21586136No it doesn't. Not even the Japanese ones do. Just no.>>21586120>>21587100>>21586465Depends on the variety and preparation. I've had eel in three different countries as well as imported Japanese eels. While I wouldn't say any were snotty, eel does tend to have a slight slimy quality to it that I don't care for and certain preparations accentuate that texture. I also don't like the strong, catfish-y flavour eels have but I particularly dislike that Japanese shit with the sauce. Taking something that tastes of catfish and glazing it like a doughnut is gross. Where I'm from, catfish is floured and fried or steamed and served cold as a salad (slimy). I can at least stomach a few bites of those preparations but Japanese stuff is just not for me.If you dislike eel too, that's okay. Unlike me growing up in an eel-eating household, you don't have to eat it
In the Japanese style, the skin and gelatin are carefully burned off over time, so if any remains, it's probably a cheap imitation.
>>21585825>>21585923>>21585927>>21585933>>21585935>>21585937>>21586408based on what?
>>21587999>Where I'm from, catfish is floured and fried or steamed and served cold as a salad (slimy).>catfishBrainfart. Meant eel.>>21588634>the skin and gelatin are carefully burned offGuess that's why it's the least slimy. Often still slimy, though. And I still don't like the taste of sweetened mud.
>>21585820I'm sure it's based, since it's so popular. I really want to enjoy unagi, but there is a muskiness, similar to escargot and bad frogs' legs (and off-season catfish, that "muddy" flavor) that is quite a bit of a turnoff, but the killer was the tiny, thin bones that would get caught between my teeth and gums. As much as I like the sauce and texture, it ends up making me gag. I'm sure it's fantastic, and won't tear down anyone who loves it, but it's just not for me.
Usually unagi sauce is a bit sweet for my liking but I really enjoy smoked eel
>>21585820You can't decide on your own, if you like it or not? Fucking cringe man.
