I've never had to learn about how welfare works but I am probably going to lose my job since the economy is crashing, and there won't be more jobs to apply to, so it's welfare or starve.

But they're probably going to cancel SNAP and whatever else, so I had better get good at shoplifting bread. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll get caught and get to eat prison food
>>

You realize anyone can get snap, right?

Hey, I'm sorry to hear that you think you're going to lose your job. I hope you don't, but if you do, definitely go to a food pantry. I work at a food pantry, and you can get some really great stuff there. We give out sandwiches and bagels, fresh fruit, and all kinds of produce. Of course, it depends on where you live, but you can usually stock up and get a ton of calories for free. We get thousands of pounds of frozen fish, chicken, turkey, and beef in weekly. You can really clean up at a food pantry.

I'm middle age, white, and unable to find a job in my career. So I get $292/month from SNAP (pic related is off by $1 as it's from last year).
Qualifying for SNAP is mainly based on income and household size. You're expected to spend 1/3rd of your income on food and the government will cover the gap between than and the $292 that is set as the amount needed for a person to each for an entire month. There's a small standard deduction (something like $800 for the first household member and $550ish for each additional household member) plus deductions for housing costs and utilities, though I'm not sure if they're at 100% or it scales. Either way, any money you make over your deductions must have 1/3rd set aside for food. If you live alone and make $300/month after deductions, you are expected to set aside $100 for food and the government will give you $192 to cover the rest of your need. If you make $876 over the deduction, you get nothing.
Now, about the work requirements. There are two. The general requirement is that you do not turn down any job offered to you and you do not voluntarily reduce your hours if you have a job. This rule is generally unenforceable as the government has no way of knowing if you turned down a job and unless they call your employer, has no way of knowing why your hours were cut.
The second work requirement is the one Congress is changing. Until a few years ago, It required adults without a dependent child to work at least 20 hours a week. Volunteer work or work training in a government approved program could count towards the 20 hour requirement. Adults over 50 were exempt due to expectations of age discrimination and lower physical ability. If you were over 50 and still on SNAP, it generally meant something was really wrong in your life that wasn't going to be fixed by cutting off your food. You can see why some women spread out their children so they always had a dependent in the household until they made it to 50.
(continued)
>>
>>21587269
When people in society help people in society that's called SOCIETY retard. it's not "cheating" to make use of social services that serve as an unfortunately necessary bandaid to our fucked up system.
>>
>>21587279
(continued)
A few years ago, the 50 year old age limit was bumped to 52 and then 54. The new law moves it to 65. It also changes the definition of a dependent child from 18 to 14.
States with high unemployment (50% above the national average) were able to have some of the SNAP work requirements waived in areas of high unemployment. Those waivers will no longer be available. States were also able to make case by case decisions on work requirement waivers. Up to 8% of those on SNAP could be waived from the work requirement. That is now 1%.
Note that EBT isn't the same thing as SNAP. EBT is the system by which funds are transferred from the government to the store where something is being purchased. There are other programs besides SNAP on EBT such as TANF and in some states, WIC. Those programs have their own rules about what can be purchased. That's why you sometimes see signs about accepting EBT at places that don't sell food. TANF funds can buy almost anything, while SNAP is limited to foods, and WIC restricted even further.
There's no such thing as an unlimited EBT card. Those videos are ragebait and common sense should tell you if they were real, people would buy houses and cars with them.
Regarding fraud, most fraud comes from immigrant communities that create fake children out of thin air and then "spend" funds at a relative's store. What really happens is no goods are exchanged but government money flows into the account of the store owner, who shares it with his relatives that are part of the scam. This scams are on the order of millions and sometimes tens of million of dollars. Tyrone selling his SNAP card for 50 cents of the dollar isn't anywhere near the scale as these immigrant community scams.

While I'm all for pushing lazy people into work, almost all employment growth has gone to visa holders and DEI. It's cruel for government policy to have favored non citizens for decades and DEI for the better part of a decade while calling those shutout of the job market lazy for not getting past the HR filter. Most of those out of the labor force aren't lazy, they're excluded intentionally. Moving the cutoff from 54 to 65 is also cruel. How many people in that age group that are currently unemployed are going to be able to find work? It's almost as if some in the government want to instigate an uprising for whatever reason as hunger is the number one reason historically why revolutions kick off.

I don't even care that the people who get welfare are black or whatever the fuck.
I care that the government to whom I pay taxes every two weeks says they don't give one single iota of a fuck if I live or die. I make fucking 2300 a month after said taxes if I'm lucky, and half of that is spent my rent, and another thousand on debt. Yet I haven't ever been able to qualify for even a single dollar in food stamps or any other assistance programs! They say "go fuck yourself" since I'm not unlucky enough to be raising a kid with so little money, as if to say having a child (even one raised in squalor by absentee parents) is of more value than my actual existence as an able bodied man of working age. It's in direct opposition to the idea of a social contract, of what government should be for it's people.

According to ChatGPT, most states don't consider money from plasma donation to be income when determining SNAP eligibility. Depending on local conditions, you can make $600-$1000 each month from donating plasma. Though most states don't consider it income for SNAP eligibility, it's still taxable income but not earned income. If it is your only income, your standard deduction will exempt it from federal tax. Might owe some state tax.

I discovered the only way to get someone from the California employment benefits office on the phone is to pay a 3rd-party $10 to spam their phone line with autocalls until you get queued.
The reason you can't get through normally is presumably because everyone else is paying to spam their lines as well.

I signed up for calfresh last year and included my fiance and elderly mother on the application. For the first 12 months we were getting about $950 a month to spend on food for our household and it has honestly been a huge game changer. No more constantly wasting money eating fast food slop twice a day, I'm actually learning to cook better meals at home and we're able to afford healthier food than before. They recently cut our benefits to about $600 a month but it'll still be enough to cover groceries if we don't go overboard. Plus, I can still work part-time jobs and as long as I don't earn more than $4k a month it doesn't affect our calfresh. Overall a great program; you goobers realize that most of our tax dollars go to israel and tech ghouls these days so food stamps are really a drop in the bucket fiscally. There's no reason not to apply if you're eligible. It's not like the money would be better spent enriching some corrupt government contractor or any of the other myriad ways the feds waste money.

So I looked into this, apparently you have to donate 8x a month, you get a huge fucking drain pipe inserted into your arm twice a week and you will look like a junkie. And you'd be lucky to make $500. Which granted is not nothing and if you're starving it's probably worth the pain but it sounds horrible.

SNAP changes are usually about signaling to the public that politicians are "doing something" about excessive spending without impacting any of the globalist programs that suck up so much money. That said, while SNAP isn't all that much of the budget relative to the benefit it provides, government medical care is breath taking in both size and growth.
Think lots of the anger comes from people seeing SNAP recipients buying junk food. People complain about steak and lobster but when I worked at a grocery store I didn't see all that much of either being paid for by with food stamps. There were lots of Doritos and soft drinks. The only people I really hated were the WIC folks, who should only have been youngish women but somehow often were guys or elderly people. No matter who they were, WIC was the source of endless problems as they always tried to buy things not on the list of approved items. Can't stress enough how much I hate those fuckers.
>>
>>21587632
There are multiple companies and they all have their own constantly changing payout schedules but it is common for there to be a bonus if you do a certain number of donations in a month. Since you can only donate twice a week, eight or nine times in a month pretty much is the max. If you keep going to the same place, they'll start offering you less and less. The key is to rotate each month between different donation sites so they have to give you a good offer to get you to come back to them.
Scaring from getting a needle pushed into your arm twice a week can happen but that's greatly reduced if you make use a scar cream and are generally healthy.

Need rest? You probably post "RIP in peace" as well. You have to basically be homeless to get OHP Plus and snap, which is only $292 a month, which you *could* live on if you were very careful. And now Trump is trying to take away snap benefits for people who aren't working. The whole system is fucked. The "middle class" really gets screwed over and the rich get richer and the poverty populace grows. The 1% is too greedy to share and most of the people who actually vote them in are hardcore in favor of this "capitalism" that's fucked them over for the last couple generations. Why a bunch of dirt poor people would be so against "spreading the wealth around" (because that's "communism" or "socialism" and those are BAD WORDS. Scary!!), but I suspect it's because they think tomorrow they'll be rich and then have to share with poorer people, possibly with darker skin! Oh no!!

This. If you get caught lying about it you will have to pay it back and may be fined or jailed. If you do get into a fucked situation where you're broke and jobless get benefits and just hold on to them as long as you can. But as soon as you have taxable income you have to get off the program.
For people who need food assistance I suggest food banks. They are a lot like supermarkets where you just load up what you want (you can have limited amounts of course or people would ruin that by clearing it out and reselling it or some shit) and they help you bag it up. It might be a little embarrassing if you're prideful. But from what I've seen around this website there are a lot of shameless cheapskates, real opportunists, who love to take advantage of that kind of thing even when they don't need it.

You were being judgemental about others while acting superior. That's instant backlash and well deserved. No wonder you have to mooch off your grandparents if you're this old and still haven't learned the basics of human interaction. Go read a Dale Carnigie book before you waste even more of your life being hated for being a dick. And yes, you are a dick. You think you're not but your life circumstances almost certainly are due to people not liking you as you really are a dick.
This could be a life changing moment for you but dicks rarely change. You are unlikely to be an exception.

People believe whatever makes them feel righteous rage. SNAP has access to many data sources, including the IRS and what used to be called "The Work Number", a service of Equifax that reports jobs and paycheck information for most large employers. When a former employer shutdown, their 401(k) program was transferred to another finance company. Due to an accounting error a decade ago when I rolled over funds into my new employer's 401(k) program, there was about $50 left in the old account. I opted to get a check instead of bothering to roll it over since I was now unemployed and any little amount helped. About two months later I got a letter from my state's benefits office demanding to know what that $50 was for. The distribution had been reported to the IRS and the IRS reported it to my state. Since the $50 was below the income threshold for SNAP, I didn't lose any benefits over it but I was reminded that I must report all income and that they have lots of ways of finding out about it.
Anons sometimes post about how grocery stores hate food stamps because at the first of the month the store is swamped with (slur) going wild with their new balance. When it's pointed out that only a couple of small states still do first of the month disbursement while almost all have moved to rolling disbursement based on last name, application date, SS#, or some other system, they double and triple down. Doesn't matter if you link them to primary sources showing disbursement schemes for different states, their egos are wrapped up in being "right" and they're sure what they heard from some guy at the Dollar General is right and those government documents on government websites are lies to trick everyone. They simply want to be outraged and feel righteous about it.
>>
>>21587214
so you have to satisfy both gross and net?
>>
>>21587197
Same. Based.
>>
>>21589023
Eligibility is based on both but the benefits amount is based only on net. It's to prevent some edge cases where a person is able to generate a large number of deductions. The state has some flexibility in deciding what to do if your gross is over the limit but your net is under the limit. They look at it on a case by case basis to ensure the deductions are legit and not structured.
>>
This was a couple of years ago but I tried to apply for...food stamps....maybe snap. idk what it was exactly. First time I even attempted to look into how to apply. I'm a single white male. making 2200 a month. My rent is 960. My monthly bills are over 600. I have to make monthly payments of 200 for a loan. That leaves me with 440 for a whole month for food and gas. Food maybe 150 a month, gas for my car to get to and from work maybe another 50 or so. Sounds like the government set the income limits pretty well.

It's also paid for by taxes the recipients paid when they had jobs. Lots of people on SNAP are on it for only a limited time between jobs. Now that the job market is ruined by 55 million visa holders, 15 million green card holders, an unknown number of illegals, DEI and outsourcing, it takes far longer now to find a new job. Many people paid into the system through their taxes for decades and now are getting a tiny bit back. You're not the only one who is paying in.
>>
>>21590061
Administration simplicity. Grocery stores are not required to accept SNAP or any other government program. Those funds are not legal tender. The government saves by not having to set up a vast food distribution system of their own and by not needing to keep track of the various health issues of millions of individuals whose diet it will have to accommodate it.
The current rules are very simple: if it has a Nutrition Facts label on it and it's not hot prepared food, it qualifies. That makes administration of the program simple. Some states are now prohibiting the purchase of soft drinks. That sounds like a good idea but in reality those sales will shift to fruit juice, which isn't actually better for you even though the government says they're great. Coca-Cola and Pepsi own most of the fruit juice market so it's not like they're even losing money, it's just shifting to different products. The recipients will still spend their full amount of benefits so there's no savings there either.
Remember the US government created the Food Pyramid (well, actually the Swedes and the US copied them). That's what the government classifies as healthy, which includes quite a bit of what you and me would consider to be junk food. Doritos are full of grains. Pork chops have a strip of fat. Guess which one the government says is healthy?
>>
>>21590125
Which is understandable until someone explains the truth to them and even shows them definitive sources but they won't let go of their preconceived notions.
>>21590115
I have no way of knowing what was said but simply looking at the benefits chart tells people that if they have more children, they'll find it easier to qualify and receive more funds. It would be stupid to have children because of that. Even with SNAP, CHIP, Section 8 and dozens of other programs, having a child is still going to cost more than benefits. The main advantage is that you can't be kicked off of SNAP as long as you have a child in the household that needs to be fed. Lots of people will make poor short term decisions with long term consequences.
>>21590210
Technically illegal but little chance of getting caught.
>>21590221
That you get $46 and not $292 is an important point that the S in SNAP means Supplemental. Most people get less than the full $292 as what they get supplements their food budget, not covers it entirely.
>>21590321

>unemployment is still historically low
And Joe Biden said food inflation was only 0.3% his last year of office. Are you completely out of touch with the millions who are trying to get jobs but can't even get past the HR filter? Do you know when the government stops counting someone as unemployed even though they haven't been able to get a job in years?
I want to give you the benefit of the doubt here but there are too many partisan ideologues running around spouting garbage from the government that doesn't match the reality the people of the country are dealing with. Millions of people want jobs, can't get jobs, and it's shitty of you and your ideological fellow travelers to shit all over them with trash statistics pulled from your asses. Put yourself in the shoes of those who are long term unemployed, shut out of the job market, and some smarmy kids comes by and tells you that unemployment is historically low. People's need to get a job doesn't disappear just because some HR Karen doesn't want to do her job and the government excludes a person from the stats because they've been out of work for too long.

Fun fact, I once worked for a take-and-bake pizza place that technically counted as grocery because the food was merely prepared, not cooked. As a result, we could accept EBT. Most people on the program were humble about it but there were a few families that were every bit the stereotype of leeches. This one fat white trash family would come in and order no fewer than six pizzas (with few veggies) and act like they owned the place. The amount of times I was tempted to spit in their food was alarming

Yes, 10% penalty. But I came out ahead because when I contributed to that 401(k), I was making over $100k and my marginal rate was 31%. I should have paid $15.50 of tax on that $50 but ended up paying only $5 because I was below the standard deduction that year. Of course all of this ignores fund growth.

There is a program where people with SNAP get to double their money when spent on produce at select farmers markets. But there aren't all that many markets that participate in the program. The ones that do are either ironically in wealthy areas or are deep into the inner city near a downtown.
Pic related is interesting because it's the first time I've ever seen the bonus bucks for buying produce advertised as working at a grocery store. These generally are state level policies so Iowa might be kicking in some state funds to make this possible.
The potential downsides are that not all produce is healthy and the double (or half price) policy can add to complications and confusion, something SNAP tries to avoid as it increases administration costs.
>>
>>21594982
I was wondering why my local farmers market was suddenly absolutely filled with rude, pushy, shouting, spitting, littering Indian and Arab immigrants. They just push old people, cut in lines, yell at the sellers, and make the overall shopping experience miserable. I have to go as soon as the market opens or its like being in some third world market.
>>
>>21595447
Those are people who live to haggle and are mad that the people at Kroger won't give them a discount no matter how much they try. Farmers markets will have vendors who are willing to make a deal but I feel sorry for them because we both know how pushy those fuckers you are talking about are.
>>
I wouldn't mind poorfags getting snap benefits if the vast majority of them weren't horrendously obese unhealthy fat retards who should lose 300 lbs before asking for free food.
Like there needs to be a weight limit for snap users.
If you aren't under a normal bmi you shouldn't qualify for snap.

The extra sharp restriction is weird. As far as I can tell, the main difference is that it has one extra gram of fat and one less gram of protein, making it slightly higher in calories.
The taste difference shouldn't matter. Maybe some list somewhere considered it gourmet cheese and that's why it's excluded. When you start drilling down really deep into the depths of government policy, often you find some minor decision that was meant to have limited impact bubbling up into other areas.

not only are the income limits and other means testing strict and prohibitive and becoming stricter, applying is purposely time-consuming and decisions are constantly delayed. It's very common for someone to go through all the hoops of properly re-proving their need and renewing their benefits and still lose SNAP for a month or two because of delays in processing and "lost paperwork."

It's a system engineered to be as difficult to qualify for and use as possible, which is what always happens when you introduce means testing.
Thanks, Clinton.
