Of the commonly cultivated gourmet mushrooms, excluding shiitake, are kings the only ones of any culinary value? Lions mane often taste like shit, blue oysters suck, chestnuts are whatever, etc etc.
>>21591871King oysters are not good. Sorry.
>>21591871Chanterelles, morels, lobster, boletes, golden oysters, hen of the woods, chicken of the woods, those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I thought someone mentioned black trumpets to me at some point too but idk
>>21591878I appreciate the proactive apology to lighten the anticipated sting of your candid reply. How did you have them? I find them quite tasty when prepared as scallops. Slicing them lengthwise, they are a bit more rubbery. That said - there's no need to apologize. I am here because I think most of them, frankly, suck.
>>21591881Aside from golden oysters and hen of the woods (maitake as the weebs say), those are not commonly cultivated. And I find golden oysters pretty tasteless, maitake is decent when fried to a crisp, but I find doing so incredibly cost ineffective for something that's ~$10+/lb. Attached are some golden's I grew.
>>21591878>>21591884Also, you have to eat the scallops hot. As they cool they get more rubbery. Here’s a crate of kings I grew as well.
>>21591871Dark souls reference?
>>21591888By commonly cultivated do you mean sold at stores? Because all of those are commonly picked by mushroom folks
>>21591926Commonly cultivated like frequently grown. These are not frequently grown:>Chanterelles, morels, lobster, boletes, chicken of the woodsThey are picked from the woods. >>21591920What??
>>21591871>Lions mane often taste like shitStart getting your mushrooms some place else.
>>21591956It’s just how they are, sometimes they’re bitter/astringent especially if picked early. I’ve grown tons and tons across several different strains, pic related. I do like them as crab cakes, however. And when they do taste good, they’re good. Nice little mops for steak juice. But they can be hit or miss.
>>21591964Guess I've just been lucky then.
>>21591970Prompted by this discussion I actually searched it they get bitter if they sit too long after harvest, and I mostly ate what didn't sell, so maybe I was just always eating the old bitter ones.
>>21591951Oooh. Pretty sure there are a good few oyster varieties out there. Enoki is good. Look up what China and Japan do since I think they have an insane mushroom market
>>21591983>Look up what China and Japan do since I think they have an insane mushroom marketYeah, I used to work with some people who would send pallets of matsutake to Japan weekly. They tend to like all the mushrooms that end with 'take' (shiitake, maitake, matsutake....). I'm not huge on most oysters personally, in general I just find the prices for gourmet mushrooms outrageously high. $14/lb for an oyster that's 90% water is just kinda nuts especially when a portobello or shiitake is tastier.
One of thos faggots punched me on a beach and I fell in the water and died (IN A GAME, IDIOT)
>>21591987>They tend to like all the mushrooms that end with 'take'I'm gonna make a wild guess that maybe take means mushroom in Japanese?
>>21591987I've heard good things about wood ear. Try visiting an Asian market for some more variety and better prices
>>21591920It's a Morrowind reference you fucking zoomer.
>>21591871that mushie cute
>>21592048dont @ me ever again, gaylord
>>21591878Batter the oyster mushrooms like you would for fried chicken and deep fry them until crispy. Trust me.
>>21591964Do you run a mushroom business?
>>21592587yes, that's how I know they are all mid
>>21593415all mid? like all 5 mid lane? i dont get what you are trying to say
