modern marketing research supports variation above anything else. coke with coffee was designed for older, more wealthy demographics (apparently it was a hit), diet coke plus was a health-centered variation targeted towards women, and the plant based sweetener one was made for the environmentally conscious. the number of different ragu pasta sauces is another good example of this shit.

I started working in an office with 90% women. Those bitches drink 4-5 diet cokes a day, it is crazy. There were arguments about one girl stealing anothers diet cokes more than once. These products are designed to be tried once or twice, then pulled from shelves after a few months to make room for the next thing. If Coke isn't constantly doing this, they'll lost that 10% to Pepsi or whatever.Its also why new startups think they have a hit on their hands in the fist month, then go under within a year.
