What do you get at your favorite bodega?
>>
>>21625970
>bodega
that's a deli.
bodegas don't have delis in them.
>>
>>21625970
I live in Florida and we don't have bodegas in this region
>>
>>21625970
Stabbed.
>>
>>21625978
a deli counter is one of the defining features of a bodega
>>
>>21626071
I'm with the other guy. While they do indeed have a counter, it's nowhere near that well-stocked. Nor is a bodega generally that well-lit. That's a deli.
>>21625970
Proper bodega, cheesesteak. A deli like place such as the one in the pic, depends what ethnicity they're meant to be aping at. Ashkenazi? Knish. "Italian"? Hoagie. Russian? Smoked fish and morkovcha. The lone Arab deli i know of? Cachir on baguette, specifically the one with the olives in it.
Viet/Khmer/Lao? Pork breast banh mi and that delicious purple jerky.
>>
Hit the papi store, cheesesteak platter (fries and a can of soda). Never trust them with deli meat.
>>
>>21626096
this is all a bullshit transparent attempt to derail the thread. accept that it’s a bodega and move on
>>
>>21626101
>papi store
I remember when white people in Philadelphia called them varieties or just corner stores and only black people called them papi stores. Then white people from M-states moved to the city into oh-so-authentic black areas and took their terminology and thought it was used by everyone from Philadelphia. It's like "jawn". Nobody said that except black folks until the out-of-towners starting appropriating it. Now you get hipster joints called shit like "Milk Jawn".

Are you legitimately schizotypal? My brother is and reacts like this to the most innocuous of stimuli. Guy in a cherry picker across the street cutting down branches? He must be a sniper! Tire flattened overnight due to a small, unnoticed puncture? The lady next door who hates me is trying to ruin my life! That sort of shit.
Why would I want to derail a thread? I'm just pointing out that no bodega I've ever, ever been to had anywhere near that much variety in their deli case and nowhere near that much lighting.
>>21626101
I once got turkey from a papi store that tasted inexplicably of tuna. Never again.

you sound like a retard
>>
>>21626122
Even a retard is right occasionally and I certainly am right now. Must be eating you up inside knowing that a retard is right and you're not. How embarrassing for you.

Usually just a breakfast sandwich of some kind, but sometimes I get more ambitious and then realize why I get lunch sandwiches at real places instead.
>>
>>21625970
ayo ock lemme get uhhh bec on french toast
>>
>>21626111
Ehhh if you were white and went to a public school in philly you were definitely poisoned by shit black people said. I agree though, out of towners turned it into pure cringe
>>
>>21626265
>public school
Private schooler here. I knew some public school folks, but if your school wasn't part of Inter-Ac or FSL, it was less likely.
The black kids at private schools were generally isolated from that sort of thing and tended to codeswitch and not use typical black speech around classmates, even outside of school.
>>
>>21626345
Well la-di-da! Someone’s parent’s cared!
>>
>>21626071
incorrect.
a bodega is defined by not having a deli counter and having exactly zero drink coolers.
>>
>>21627604
Don’t only new yorkers call cornerstores bodegas?
>>
>>21627604
False. You’re making shit up. The common understanding has been out there for decades and you can’t undo it by trolling
>>
>21627724
True. And that definition is >>21626096
>21627604
Shut up, retard.
>>21627722
Moreorless. Some people have started to use the term elsewhere but yeah: it's mostly a NY thing and even there, it was almost exclusively a Bronx thing up until the 90s. Like >>21626265's and >>21626111's examples of jawn and papi store starting with blacks in Philadelphia and spreading elsewhere, bodega started among the Puerto Ricans and Dominicans.
In the '80s and '90s, the term "bodega" was mainly used by Nuyoricans and other Latinos in urban centers, especially New York but the term did start spreading in the early 2000s. Hipster gentrification transformed neighbourhoods and the media started paying more attention to these stores.
By the early 2000s, as people from different backgrounds moved into traditionally working-class neighbourhoods and hipster subcultures began romanticising the idea of "local gems" or "hidden spots," and appropriating local cultures, the term "bodega" became more mainstream.
The term has existed in English-language before for a while, albeit without the overwhelming usage it has today. For example z I remember the term being used in at least two movies, The Warriors and Do the Right Thing.
So, it's a combination of shifting cultural perceptions, media representation, and urban transformation that led to the term becoming widely used outside the original Latino communities. As in Philadelphia, white people in New York just said corner store or corner deli or just "the store" if it happened to be in the middle of the block.

Never actually watched Half Baked. Really should get around to it. Friends have talked it up to me for so long (literally decades) that it feels like I've seen it already but I was unfamiliar with this scene. Only reason I didn't mention. I otherwise absolutely would have. Good call.
