I swear to God, most Soviet boomers made the blandest food possible. Other than salt, pepper, mayo and horseradish they never use any other seasonings or condiments. Paprika AT MOST, maybe. Even when my parents made a salad they never used any oil or vinegar, just cut vegetables and cilantro. They'd rather eat a bland-ass soup and then have a bite of a pickle than put more seasoning in the food. And people say that the British cuisine is bland. What a joke.

Good slavshit cooking often uses stuff like nutmeg also. I think the issue is the same as the bong issue which is that the fundamental dishes are fine but most people either lost the ability to cook entirely or lost the ability to make those dishes competently. In both cases a few decades of hardship and 'cooking is female oppression' propaganda (feminist in the UK, commie in the east) caused this loss of ability.Worldwide the best cuisines are from the nations and cultures with the worst track record on female freedom. Not necessarily because women are inherently better cooks or anything just because grandmother->mother->daughter transmission is key for cooking techniques and the little tips that elevate food from bland to tasty. The ones that had a sudden shock that broke this chain, possibly combined with a war or famine, lost all the built up knowledge.
