Can someone explain what the fuck is even different about conical burr sets marketed for "espresso"? Are they actually cambered differently, or is it just marketing bullshit with how the stops are set?

Intentionally more bimodal with a bigger % of fines. A "rounder", blendier profile with a higher emphasis on body from the extra fines. That rounding will mask some of the shit notes from the darker roasts the burrs are tailored for.
>they actually cambered differently
Fewer, more aggressive prebreakers and a smaller outfall(gap between inner and outer burr) forcing more breakage and fines. If the outfalls were bigger(like the ZP6) chunkier boulders can just fall out before getting completely blitzed into powder over a few more rotations.
>inb4 flat burr better
There are bimodal flats. Stock df54/64, eureka mignons, Weber Base etc etc. Running super unimodal filter flats on espresso is a relatively new thing.

so do local roasters actually let you buy green beans or would they get mad about you not wanting their product?
>>
>>21665939
>so do local roasters actually let you buy green beans
no
and they dont because there is no money to be made doing it
they buy greens in bags bigger than they would be able to sell
so on the off chance that someone wants to buy greens from them they would have to repackage it and then add a markup because of the packaging and labor and + tax + tip
just buy straight from the distributor.
its cheaper and easier
if you are in US and want greens just buy from sweet maria's

Verve's single origins are decent if they have them, problem with grocery store coffee is it's usually stale unless you luck out with a super recent roast date. You're probably better off with fresher coffee from a mid local roaster.

Are you the guy I replied to in the last thread who got an SR800? If so and you are following everything I said I can see why would think that. It certainly is pretty easy to get a decent roast. You can easily roast as good as most roasters with a little practice especially if you aren't super particular and trying to really dial things in. If you want to step it up and really push your greens to get the best out of them that's when things can get a bit more challenging.
You will also probably run into some greens that make you think everything before this has been a fluke. They all have to be treated a little differently and you'll be glad you've been logging your roasts and using Artisan when you start running into challenging greens. You may have started with some easier greens.
If you haven't already ordered your thermocouple ignore my previous recommendation as the BounceBuster has just released. You can find it on Etsy. Its now the best option out there for the FreshRoast roasters for Artisan integration.

Tea mug if I've ever seen one
>>
I've been buying whatever decent looking whole beans Costco has on sale and using a blade grinder and drip coffee maker for about 10 years. It (was) a decent step up from supermarket crap, but since coffee prices spiked this year, the selection at Costco went down considerably and even whole bean blends that were "passable" before like major Dickinson's, taste like fucking ass now.

It's about $25/lb for any local roasted single origin, so...Ive decided to start roasting my own.

I'm ordering a poppo from sweet Maria's today. I've been reading up it and I have a killawat and plenty of extension cords so I'm hopeful I can make some decent beans soon. My favorite beans in the past have medium roasted Sumatrans, blue mountain (probably not gonna buy that RN lol) and good mocha Java, but Ive also enjoyed some fruity African stuff as well.

Since idk what 4 bags of greens come in my sweet Maria's sampler, does anyone have suggestions for another green available at Sweet Maria's rn that should be easier to roast to medium in a poppo that have a darker, more chocolatey profile?

most lower-altitude coffees can achieve a chocolatey profile if you roast them dark enough
so just check out their indonesian stock and pick something that appeals to you, id recommend getting more of one bean than smaller amounts of a couple so you can really get a hang of it

showing me something i dont understand and saying its true and then flipping out when told i dont understand and to be given a simpler example of proof in a form i understand is insane and shows that you are either incapable of proving it or you yourself dont understand it and are just parroting information and believe i should believe it implicitly because you believed it implicitly.

y'know if i was told 2+2=4 but i wasnt shown proof and i just believed it and then i tried to tell someone else that 2+2=4 and they asked for proof and i was incapable of providing some i would probably have a melty just like you did too.

Get the Yemen Mokka from them and take it to city+ or full city. If you like medium roast with chocolate notes you will love this. Even at city/city+ this coffee is very chocolatey and has some amazing grain notes. Its kind of like a Kinder Country.

If you haven't bought already and can swing it I would recommend just picking up a refurb SR800. At least get the Popper or build a HGBM. You can do that really cheaply. Roasters like the Poppo are just kind of frustrating and if you do decide to stick with it you will be wanting to upgrade very quickly.

Either way I would definitely recommend when you do buy more greens to buy a big bag rather than samples. When you are first learning how to roast you will be done with a sample bag before you get it figured out and then you're starting over again with a new coffee.

fine if you want to be pedantic about it, i do not have any proof for YOU because you do not have the prerequisite knowledge for organic chemistry. nor am i going to sit down with you and spend many hours giving you sensory demonstrations that would give you a foundation to base your assumptions on. that being said, it is proof to someone else in this thread

>i do not have any proof for YOU because you do not have the prerequisite knowledge for organic chemistry. nor am i going to sit down with you and spend many hours giving you sensory demonstrations that would give you a foundation to base your assumptions on
so why did you offer it?
and is that the ONLY way to know that "coffee flavor is just a bunch of maillard products"
there isnt a youtube video talking about it?
there isnt anyone who has made some form of layman focused content that goes over this supposed fact?
i just feel that if it was as true as you claim it is the information would be more accessible than "look at this chemistry diagram"
like if you said "caffeine is water soluble" and i asked for proof it would be very easy to find proof that a layman can understand OR if you understand it to be true and understand why its true it should be trivial to teach it using common language and basic principles that a layman would have experienced.
>>
>>21674241
Thanks and you're probably right about the volume. 1lb only gives me 4 batches to try. I already ordered the beans, but yemen mokka is one of the bags I have coming. I've been reading up on roasting and I realize the limited abilities a popcorn maker has. I'm sure I'll be upgrading soon enough but...gotta start somewhere.

I'm a fairly handy guy and I'm interested in possibly building something myself with a heat gun or finding a cheaper quest M6/similar manual drum roaster that I can use with a propane camp stove or homemade hog burner. I'm not too concerned with all the programmable stuff.

Ironically, I had a job for a few years maintaining commercial combustion equipment/programming plcs, etc...which is probably why I'm more interested in just doing it manually. Why fuck with all that shit when it seems like such a simple skill? (At least in premise).
>>
>>21674270

got a giftcard for the popular hipster coffee shop/roaster in town and bought some beans for my french press but the grounds don't bloom and they all sink to the bottom. the bag says they were roasted within the last week and they're on the lighter. I'm not expert and they don't taste *bad* but what does this mean, they sat on the beans too long before roasting and they lost all their gas? does that affect flavor? it's the oils, roast and brew that *matters* right?
>>
>>21674517
the gas is caused by the roasting process, so they couldn't have sat on unroasted beans. they either vacuum sucked all the gas out or they lied about something

If you mean putting the grounds in cold water in the French press carafe and letting in brew overnight in the Fridge, then yes, and that's how I do it.

If you mean brewing in hot water in a French press then cooling it in the fridge, then no. Hot water extracts differently than cold water does.

Its mostly that you need to wait between batches, the batch size is small, reproducibility is difficult, and you have no control over heat level or air flow. Its okay but it does make a lot of people either say fuck this and give up or upgrade right away.

What I would recommend is start checking thrift stores and local online marketplaces and looking for bread machines now. You can usually find them very cheap but it might take a minute to actually find one. Then you just need a cheap heat gun from Harbor Freight or somewhere and I'm sure you'd have everything else to finish it. There are lots of ways to go it just look up corretto roaster or HGBM roasters.

Whats nice about the HGBM is the bread machine does the stirring for you so you just need a heat gun and a stand. The other alternative is to get a whirley pop, put a hole in the top for a heat gun and then hook up a cheap drill to the handle.

The plus side on both of those is it will give you the biggest batch size by far unless you are spending 1000s on a roaster.
