In this country people like to stew pears in this time of the year.
We do it with a special kind of pear, stew it in red wine, tawny port or berry juice and add various spices.
Along with cinnamon, star anise is one of the main ones people do it with.
Star anise is not something I use a lot, but I can't imagine making those without it.
