My parents genuinely cannot tell the difference between Japan and China. They think "Chinese" is synonymous with "Asian" and they can't distinguish between any Asian countries, people, or culture. They call Indians "east asians". I was talking to my dad about some recent Chinese movie I saw, and after like five minutes he said "wait... so this takes place in the modern day?" He couldn't even conceive of China beyond great wall pagoda rice fields people.
