This. OP, there is a type of pancake in the US called "buckwheat" but other than that, no one has whole wheat pancakes. It also requires buttermilk and a topping of butter and maple to be American style. Looking at your cross section, I'd say it was thick, and probably a bit dry and overcooked. The browning was pretty dark. Flip it the moment the bubbles appear throughout. Golden yes, brown no. You can make a lighter batter by folding in some eggwhites, though the buttermilk should react to make the bubbles. Eggwhites is how Jackie Kennedy made them.

man i'm a southfag and grew up eating these suckers fried in bacon grease or salted butter. the recipe was just cornmeal, egg, a little baking soda, and whatever liquid was on hand, usually milk or flat beer. you eat them with butter and hotsauce, cane syrup, or molassas, and black chicory coffee. the cornmeal steams on the inside and gets crispy on the outside. fuck i should make some this weekend
