The insanely expensive Star War hotel that got shut down after a few months had all the employees in costume and always in character but the other guests were walking around in cargo shorts and Taylor Swift tshirts. It's difficult to feel immersed when others are dressed that way. When Anthony Bourdain announced his Asian street food project in New York, I knew it was going to have the same problem. He could have cooks making food similar to what you'd get in some random alleyway in Saigon but being surrounded by fellow tourists in the middle of Manhattan wasn't going to capture the essence of the back alley experience. Some places do attempt to protect the atmosphere. Many higher end restaurants require a coat and tie, offering to loan them out if necessary, so the experience in the dining room isn't compromised. At the other end, the Heart Attack Grille in Las Vegas puts everyone in medical gowns. Star Trek costumes are a good bit more intricate so that approach would be more difficult to achieve.

The immediate downsides are that car insurance is expensive and the healthcare here is some of the worst in the country. If I had school-aged children I'd probably leave the city before middle school or save up for private school. Also if you are an anxious person it's sometimes hard not to think about the groundwater being sucked up by CA and the potential for nuclear testing in Nevada again. Objectively it was nothing special but I had a good time. Then there is a meal at Sinatra in the Wynn, which will run you about $250 solo (app/entree/drink/dessert/gratuity). There's business casual dress code though, don't bother if you aren't incidentally packing a nice shirt and slacks. The "locals strip" is Fremont Street and the Arts District (Bar Ginza is my rec near here if your layover allows for it). If you have to keep your bags with you I would NOT go to Fremont Street.For touristy stuff you can grab a ticket for OmegaMart at Area51. I think it's neat that it exists but it's just SCP lite.
