these Vietnamese might be onto something
i tried espresso and moka with the robusta and both were ok but just made a v60 and its pretty damn smooth.
tasty too but less punchy.
and the caffeine feels way stronger too.
like only 2 sips(of 300ml) and i feel like i need to take a break or i might die.
i was watching an old brian quan video and he mentioned he was doing 3 pours, 100g each, so i copied that.
and i ran out of sibarist filters which are soooo much faster than the stock hario v60 ones.
took like 3 minutes after the final pour to fully drain, compared to the sibarist which took like 40s at most.
well, at least now i know how ill be brewing the rest of the bag.

Tim Wendelboe won the WBC in 2004 and pushed "Nordic roasts" into the mainstream. Coffee Collective was founded 3 years later and Drop Coffee Roasters 2 years after that. Its hardly a new idea.
People have been brewing ultralight high clarity coffees worldwide for 20 years at least and ultralights were popular in Northern Europe since the 90s thanks to people like Terje Hoftun.

Is the Sage Bambino tamper considered ok? As a newbie I'm torn, when I tamper it takes a lot of effort to not have clumps of coffee on top and weird waves on the sides, just wondering if it's a severe skill issue or if I should get a better tamper.

oh i can see how you got that.
no i was just commenting on the robusta in general
and the comment on the v60 meant that it took me a few tries at brewing it different ways to realise how to brew it correctly and see its potential.
probably could have made it a little clearer by rewording it.

and i could be wrong but dont italians generally brew a robusta/arabica blend?
i wasnt aware that italians in general brewed 100% robusta.

either way, no problem. :)

I do enjoy coffee and have a cheap espresso machine, decent grinder, and also use v60 a bunch.

Nespresso makes a coffee pod machine that's $90 for Black Friday which I'm looking at.

>>
>>21733983
I did the math on this once and nespresso pods are something like 10% more expensive than good enough coffee and much cheaper than gourmet coffee

though the vertuoline (in ur pic) is awful, the one to get is the original line. The original line is a much smaller machine, much more reliable, cheaper pods and a better cup of coffee. The vertuoline uses a bunch of stupid gimmicky bullshit to appeal to soccermoms that have jobs in HR and are assigned to purchase a pod espresso machine that's not too expensive but not excessively cheap for the break room.
I recommend the purple pods, I think they're called arpeggio.

Well this my second day in a row using this penis pump. I just used some bustelo. The first day I think I used too much water. I drank it black. It tasted a bit too acidic and bitter. The tube empties to about halfway like immediately so I thought I needed to add more water. The second day I just followed the directions exactly. Tried it black again and it was less bitter tasting. Added a splash of oat milk and it tasted pretty much perfect. Overall I think it was a good purchase.

I think it was the same machine, picrel, but I don't remember the name of the pods, just that they were decaf. I also discovered you can't use the machine to run hot water without a pod, so you might need a funny setup for loading your own beans, if you plan to.

what about a bimetallic strip that triggers a rube goldberg style contraption that lifts the kettle off the heat once it has reached the desired temperature.

maybe a hair trigger set inside a thermometer like this
the pointer hits say 85c(thermal mass will drag it to 90) which physically interacts with a trigger which then mechanically turns off the heat.

or you could use use a wound clock that times the water and mechanically turns off the heat.
you have timed that the given vessel filled with x water reaches the desired temperature in 5 minutes, the clock hits 5 minutes which triggers the heat shut off.
you could alter the mechanism of a cuckoo clock.

or even a bag of sand that empties at a set rate
at 5 minutes it has deposited enough sand to lift the kettle off the heat using a series of ropes and pulleys

>>
>>21734924
>dial for voltage and a thermometer readout....
no i dont believe so
simplest you can get is a simple electronic on/off switch.

i think a similar discussion has occurred before and i think it resulted in finding there was some like laboratory grade induction hotplate that had something similar to what you are talking about but it was wildly expensive and physically large.(use these search terms to find examples "analogue temperature controlled hot plate")

>dial for voltage and a thermometer

>I guess you are just too dumb to realize what you are asking for
I know exactly what I'm asking for.
I'm asking for a kettle with an analog potentiometer that controls voltage.

Should be pretty easy and cheap for someone to manufacture, and it wouldn't be hard to set a readout on the dial that corresponds to a fairly accurate temperature estimates.

fuck computers.

That assumes that you're going to be filling the kettle with the exact same amount of water every time.
>>
>>21734958
>That assumes that you're going to be filling the kettle with the exact same amount of water every time.
No, it just means it takes longer to reach that temp if I use more or less water, hence the thermometer.
>>
>>21734946
Except adjusting voltage wouldn't actually do anything aside from change how long it takes to come to the boil which is a useless unless the temp of the water you add is always the same, the volume of water you are adding is always the same, and the ambient temp is always the same.
You'd still have to put a thermometer in it, watch the thermometer, and then remove it when it gets to your desired temp in which case just buy any kettle and pop a thermometer in it.
>>
>>21734970
To add to this there would still be no way to have it shut off at a certain temp so you're always going to end up with boiling water or watching a thermometer and pulling early.

I appreciate the thought and would usually agree (I'm not buying those $49.99+shipping+tip ones) but coffee is reasonably cheap as hobbies go and buying a carafe is a cheap part of that cheap hobby that I'll interact with daily. I don't break things so $20 very pessimistically amortized over a year is 5 cents/use which I'm fine with to not pour out of a mason jar every morning

meh. The 'best' grinder within that price point is personal preference. Many go with the K6 because it's burr is a clone of the C40 burr, but that's not necessarily the best burr out there, just the most popular.
Don't want a manual grinder? DF54 is the cheapest electric grinder that's not absolute trash.

>Bialetti New Venus 6tz 235 ml
Moka makes pretty mediocre coffee. Definitely over-hyped as a brewer. You're better off with an immersion brewer or even just a small saucepan and sieve.
If you can get a gooseneck kettle, I suggest getting a pourover brewer. The Hario Switch doubles as an immersion brewer as well as pourover.

Oopsie, we've miscalculated. I've been spoiled by ordering from Coava and some local roasters, I usually get the stuff at my door within 3-4 days.
I already had some cheaper beans from Trader Joe's for my wife's lattes, though they're not stellar for just espresso. Just milk drinks for me for a little while, I guess.
The TJ's Buunni is actually not bad for the price. I also tried the Bolivian blend, but I think it's a bit dark for my taste.

I've had a signature and now a flair58. Yeah they make great espresso. You'll need something else to heat+foam milk if you go the manual route. I like my Dreo Baristamaker. Minimum capacity is a little big to be perfect for me but it'll work out great for caps. Gaggia/Breville Bambino may be less headache for you though.
>>
>>21744605
they can but the 58 is a lot better. Problem I had with this is that you have to heat up portafilter in boiling water. So if you want to just make a quick espresso its a pain in the ass. Even bigger pain in the ass if you are pulling multiple shots. I have a 58 that comes with a better portafilter for bigger dosing, it preheats, and it allows for quicker access/changing of portafilter. I bought 3 portafilters I knock them out and then do cleaning afterwords. You can do turbo shots with manual without any fuss as well.

If turbo shots are not coming out sweet does that mean to grind finer or is it a different ballgame? I'm getting like 10-12 second shot times. Should I be going for shorter duration?
>>
>>21739533
>even a small cup

B1. You need more of it. Or your diet lends itself to being low on it (sugar, alcohol, SSRIs deplete it). Go easier on carbs in general and/or supplement to see if you tolerate it better. Avoid espresso. Favor Dark Roasts (least caffeine content).
>>
>>21744722
The first person I spoke to about coffee told me to just shut up and buy a bambino. Maybe I'll save up and just get one of those. Ty. Rn I use a French press and a hand held frother.

>>>21744726
Would you recommend the 58 or just get a bambino? The milk steamer would be a plus too.

Also, I get my coffee locally roasted, fresh, and then I grind it all for the next 2-3 weeks. Is grinding it fresh before I use it necessary/better?
>>
>turbo shot
isn't that the kind of shot that super automatics do?
i thought we had taste here
>>
>>21744778
>Is grinding it fresh before I use it necessary/better?
Yes to both. If you're planning on keeping that same preground workflow you'll need a pressurized basket like some of those cheaper flairs come with. They call it a "Flow control portafiler". White aluminum body Neos are on liquidation for $104 right now.
https://flairespresso.com/product/the-neo/
>>
>>21744797
Oh either they just sold the last one or the site was bugged for me. Neo Flex, Go, and Classic all have that extra portafilter/adapter for preground.
>>
>>21744780
It can taste good. Although I've only ever gotten good tasting ones by accident
>>
>>21744778
Depends on your philosophy when it comes to coffee. Do you want to know the ins and outs? Do you value convenience over knowledge? With hand cranked you'll fuck up more but you'll also learn more. It's like learning to drive a car with manual transmission. You understand your car a lot more than an automatic. In the same way less points of error on the machine. No boiler/plumbing that goes bad. This usually makes it cheaper than the autos. The automatic has consistency though. Always grind fresh.
>>
>>21744780
it's an espresso shot made with a coarse grind. the idea is that the coarse grind will allow more even water contact throughout the puck preventing channeling. pulls very quick, which i believe is how it gets the name.

>>21744734
i'd recommend increasing the shot duration first. the coarse grind will decrease resistance so if you're aiming for 9 bar the shot will run too quick and be underextracted. by pulling the shot at a lower pressure you'll increase water contact time and should see improvement. with a manual machine, i wouldn't even look at the pressure gauge and would just pull the lever much slower. aim for 30 seconds to start.

You need something for the milk like a bellman steamer and then you have a whole mess of stuff to get out and fuck with just to make a cappuccino and price wise you're already in line with a entry level semi-auto.

>shut up and buy a bambino
true
the fact you are asking the question in the way that you are means you should get the bambino.

Seems Espresso Outlet listing those Zerohero grinders for $20 on ebay broke amazon since they're listing the z5 for $35 now.

That's pretty cool. I have a vintage bellman that I got just to have in the collection but I never use it. They do work though and are a good option.
