This is about bilberries vs blueberries, not Europe vs North America. Don't take it personal.
>>
>>21733595
bilberries refuse to be cultivated
that's how you got the inferior berry
>>

I wonder what it’s like to straight up eat a cranberry
>>
>>21734710
I've been buying and using fresh cranberries and tried that. They're tart. It's nothing like most other berries, it's more like eating a lemon. It's good chopped up and added to other things that way sometimes for some acidity but otherwise there's a good reason most people are just using it for cranberry sauce.

>It's nothing like most other berries, it's more like eating a lemon.
Also they're not juicy either, they're like kind of dry with an air pocket inside. So imagine a lemon if it wasn't juicy.

Tart, but very ripe ones can be kinda good despite the tartness.
My 22 month old toddler loves to eat fresh cranberries, she would eat them until she was sick if I let her.

If you want to eat a berry that tastes like cranberry but is sweeter, Red Huckleberry(Vaccinium parvifolium) is pretty close, but they don't grow in most of the world and I don't think they are commonly cultivated.

>Bilberries
up until i was 19, I didn't even knew american blueberries exist
then I got a pastry with them and it was fucking disgusting

it's so easy foraging bilberries here
1 Saturday in the black forest during season and I've got like 5-10kg
I usually go 2-3x and freeze them for a years worth of supply

where? I live in the region (around Freudenstadt)
never noticed any
>>

>where? I live in the region (around Freudenstadt)
i'm not gonna tell you my exact spots
but I always forage between Karlsruhe and Freudenstadt (so Nordschwarzwald)

>never noticed any
you must be kidding, right!?

do you know how they look?
because there are blueberry shrubs literally everywhere in the black forest
even alongside popular hiking paths

larger areas, where you can actually pick for a few hours, are a bit more rare
just try to follow forest ranger paths alongside the mountain slopes, usually like ~2/3 up the hills (so neither in the valleys nor on "top")
the further away from parking, popular paths and bigger roads the better

also you need a "Blaubeerkamm" (berry picking rake?)
otherwise it's gonna take forever
but please don't buy a shitty one online
they destroy the shrubs!

I like them; they are tart but not astringent.
>>21734771
My toddler doesn't like them, but always bites one in half when I eat them in front of her; I think she likes their appearance. She will chew a whole coffee bean, so I'm not sure why she draws the line at cranberries.
>>21733595
I think I used to find them growing wild in Down East Maine; there were definitely some edible not-blueberries in the area.

ditto this, for me it was when i was around 26

for whatever reason, fresh american blueberries in our stores are called the same thing as regular blueberries - fortunately they aren't being put in jam
>>
>>21733630
If that were true, you'd just mention the berry names. Stop being a cowardly attention seeker.

in my language, both berries have the same name
in english, bilberry is also known as "european blueberry"
they're both blueberries, so adding "american" helps as a specifier
>>

What a terrible comparative aphorism
>>
>>21735805
which language?
at least in finnish the american blueberries are called pensasmustikka
they are absolute garbage tier berry and it annoys me that we translate mustikka to blueberry

Those typically aren't blueberries. Its usually sugar syrup and wheat flour with artificial dye.

have you guys heard of the jungle berry? hint of blueberry flavor, really seedy, you squeeze the guts out to eat. it's a S.E.A. fruit. i used to go up to the jungle to eat them
>>
>>21733595
Speaking of berries, I dislike store bought blackberries, they're always underripe so they're sour or flavorless. If I'm not picking blackberries myself I don't want them.
>>
>>21739086
It's an issue with berries in general. They're delicate and don't have a long shelf life so they're usually picked underripe. Frozen can be better but the texture is mushy if you thaw them.
